garrett haake is at the capitol. garrett, this bipartisan bill breaks decades of congressional gridlock on guns. >> that's right, lester lawmakers in both parties hailed this as a significant breakthrough on an issue in which congress has traditionally failed to act despite enormous public pressure to do so. now, this bill centers around enhanced background checks for any would be gun buyers under 21. new resources for states to enact red flag laws and a $7 billion investment in mental health programs the senate acting first passing the bill late last night in an emotional vote as gun violence survivors and advocates looked on. 15 republicans joining all democrats in support house gop leader urged their members to oppose this bill which they said infringed on second amendment rights but 14 house republicans voted for it anyway, including the representatives of buffalo and uvalde tonight, lester, all that's left is for president biden to sign this bill into law. we expect to see that in coming days. >> garrett haake, t

conversation msnbc political analyst peter baker and nbc news senior capitol hill correspondent garrett haake. good morning to you both. garrett, i know you spoke exclusively with the member leading today's hearing democratic congressman pete aguilar of california. tell us what he told you and also i'd be interested in your insights as to why a group was allowed on a tour of the capitol on january 5th where it was obviously closed to the public because of covid. >> well on the tour, the capitol has been closed for quite a long time and there were very few people up here during that period. it wasn't unusual to see members leading off the books tours in parts of the capitol or in parts of the office buildings. but the pikes you just showed, particularly one where the gentleman is taking a picture at a security checkpoint, to me spending too much of my life in those tunnels, that is the one that is hardest to explain. on the the investigation front, obviously the committee knows who this person was to be able to link both of them appearing in the tunnel and then appearing in that video outside

joining us now from capitol hill, nbc news correspondent garrett haake.s less significant than the progress that appears to being made here. i'm a realist on these things. i've covered lots of talks around gun safety legislation that have gone nowhere. but this particular group does seem to have gotten farther on the specifics than any other group i have covered. in talking to senators involved in these conversations last night, the contour of what they areonto negotiating are startin come into focus. on background checks, there is a specific focus on making sure that younger people, 18 to 21, that their juvenile records are looked at when they apply to purchase a firearm. senator john cornyn believes ny that's the gap that the shooter in uvalde fell into. that if his juvenile records hae been available to authorities when they were conducting the background check, he would have never been sold a weapon. so they are trying to deal with that and make sure younger buyers of weapons have their backgrounds looked at. they are incentivizing states to put red f

join here we with me is garrett haake. the gun violence in philadelphia over the weekend just one example of the chaos sparking fear in so many communities. >> reporter: in a terrifying example at that, there have been more mass shootings so far this year than the number of days that have passed in 2022, a string of those happening over the past couple of days from a strip mall in phoenix to a graduation party in south carolina, outside of a nightclub in chattanooga, tennessee, and of course along one of the most iconic streets here in philadelphia, south street, 14 people shot, three of those people have died according to police. one thing complicating the investigation is the sheer number of people out and about on saturday night. this is a very popular street, a magnet for not only locals but tourists. there were hundreds of people on this street when bullets started flying. police believe it all started between an argument between two men. it was a physical altercation they say had escalated and eventually became a sho

. >> i want to bring in nbc's ken dylanian, and garrett haake on the ill, and kevin kirshner. grads to see all of you have, look, glenn, let's talk about this letter. the doj is pretty adamant it needs the committee's cooperation. in fact, they called it critical. what is your take on this? why did they write the letter? >> chris, they're presenting the case to a grand jury. they even say in there there's undoubtedly lots of overlap between the witnesses being presented to the grand jury and the witnesses who have testified to the january 6th committee. what the federal prosecutors want to make sure they see is the entire university of the testimony of any witness. they may be prepared too ask a grand jury to return indictments against one or more individuals. the last thing they want is for a witness they're relying on to seek that indict to have potentially said something inconsistent in other sworn testimony that they gave before a congressional committee. i think the second reason is they are involved in prosecutions present by against oath keepers and proud boys, if they

then, of course, my colleague garrett haake and i reporting in the last hour or so that another one of the witnesses is going to be a capitol police officer, caroline edwards, injured in that and who officers have recalled to me that they remember hearing her call for help over the radio on january 6. here is how she remembered that day to garrett in an interview a year ago. >> they started ripping down barriers. that's when the moment that i knew, this is not like any other protest. they approached our line. they injured me and a couple of officers by tearing down our barricade. and then the fight on the west front began. it was chaos. i have never seen anything like that. when somebody shows me footage of the 6th, i have to have them turn off the sound. that sound, that screaming, that just constant -- i can't hear it. it takes me back to a very bad place. >> i'm struck in hearing what the officer was saying there. other lawmakers who i have interviewed in the house chambers say something similar, they can't listen to video of that day with the sound on. it's going to be a very traum

. >>> i want to bring in our senior capitol hill correspondent garrett haake who has been all over this for us. you've been covering this building. a couple of things for you here. first, you have new reporting on who else we're going to see giving testimony in the days to come. and then second, another new revelation that came out of this, which was from the committee that congressman scott perry, republican, of course, had asked former president trump for a pardon. perry's spokespeople, i believe today, are outright denying this happened, and, garrett, i wonder if that is not a question mark considering presumably this committee would have some receipts in order to specifically name congressman perry. do we know anything more on that point? >> i think perry's spokesperson called it a soulless lie. that's not just a denial, that's as strong of a denial as you can get. we have seen some denials be turned over and i find it hard to believe that the committee would put that out there, specifically, when there has long been discussion about this as a theoretical possibility that there were

i want to bring in garrett haake, along with white house correspondent carol lee.ant to start with you, cara. at times briefings can be somewhat lighthearted. now this one. matthew mccoy hi had a very clear and emotional message not just to the audience in the briefing room, but presumably the audience watching live across the country. >> that's right, hallie, he made an impassioned plea to pass legislation his wife was there. she was holding sneakers of one of the victims who wanted to be a marine biologist when she grew up. he really said this was a time for congress not to think about their next election, but to think about doing something larger than themselves. that's part of what he said. he said, make the loss of these lives matter. so we've seen a lot of action here at the white house today, in terms of the president trying to get behind and push for some sort of gun regulation, legislation. he med with senator murphy. you saw matthew mcconaughey come out. as for the talks in congress and where the white house fits in, the president had this meeting. it was

with us now to talk about all of this, nbc news senior capitol hill correspondent, garrett haake, and moderator of washington week on pbs and former special prosecutor shawn woo. garrett, you were able to talk to congressman kinzinger. what did he tell you? >> reporter: this hearing is going to go back and examine this pressure campaign at doj as you were outlining was broadly about trying to get the department of justice to investigate or at least say it was investigating donald trump's claims of voter fraud. then it was about a specific effort to remove leadership and replace them with folks who might be more pliant and more willing to do so when that first effort failed. we'll see that broadly laid out here. we'll probably hear the name, scott perry, the republican congressman, who was teased in one of these first hearings who asked for a pardon. we know he was involved in the behind the scenes doj effort. that will be the picture the committee tries to paint today. >> shawn, it's very clearly that if people like jeffrey rosen, richard donaghue and richard engel had not stood up to

. >> joining us now, nbc news senior capitol hill correspondent garrett haake, nbc news correspondent vaughn hilliard, luke broadwater from "the new york times" and joyce vance, professor at university of alabama school of law and msnbc legal analyst. garrett, you spoke with pete aguilar, who is taking a lead role today. what did he tell you about what we can expect? >> reporter: we can expect to hear that mike pence was both under more pressure and in more danger in the leadup to january 6th and on january 6th than has been previously reported. the committee plans to lay out the genesis of this scheme to make pence the de facto decider of the 2020 election that began in mid-december. that basically every court case the trump campaign lost, the pressure on pence to be the last option for trump grew and grew and grew. even leading up to the 6th itself with one final phone conversation between the vice president and the president, with president trump at the time leaning hard on pence on the morning of the 6th to make this unilateral decision to overturn the election results. then as he

joining us garrett haake, karen letting, a reporter at "the washington post" and msnbc contributor and the author of a very stable genius and i can fix it, and paul butler, former federal prosecutor and professor at the georgetown school of law and msnbc legal analyst. what's next for the investigation? >> there's lots of moving parts here and go in different directions. as it pertains to navarro, he is in court today and dropped his civil suit against the committee and he's hired new lawyers. i don't know if that is a change in tone from him or how he might respond to the committee, but i suppose we'll find that out later today. on ginni thomas, the committee has sent her a formal invitation to come testify. thomas told the daily collar she would be happy to clear up misconceptions about her role. john eastman has weighed in on an online forum saying conversations about the election weren't necessarily conspiratorial. she asked him to brief a group she talks to. nevertheless, the committee has renewed interest in figuring out what exactly thomas was doing and with whom she was communi

this exchange just took place with my colleague garrett haake.night, do you believe the committee will be able to reach the big chunk of americans who decided they just don't care about that anymore? >> i don't think that's the case. first of all, let me just thank the members of the committee. they have been hard at work doing their patriotic duty to seek the truth, and we will see that revealed. i kept my distance from the committee, so i'll be watching just as everyone else is to see the presentation. i believe that tonight will be sort of an opening of the narration, the narrative of what happened as an assault on our democracy, on our constitution, on our capitol, on our congre in a very violent way for a specific purpose to undermine the constitution of the united states on a day set aside for the peaceful transfer of power. >> can i prere phrase that then? do you worry at all there is this chunk of people who decided the work of this committee isn't particularly important? >> i do not know that. i know that there are people who would like
