garvin thomas joins us, and it sounds unbelievable, garvin. >> reporter: when you see videos like thatthat you showed us at the top of the news cast, you realize how frantic things get when the entire world around you is burning. this couple managed to keep their heads and come up with a unique way to survive. >> there must have been hot summer nights in the past when the pool looked enticing for a dip. this past sunday night, however, it looked nothing short of life saving. >> this was our only option. so we -- >> we tried to get out. >> we ran down here and found our way into the pool. >> reporter: the couple's or deal started not with the smell of smoke or a glimpse of flame but with a phone call. >> our daughter called from san francisco, and she said you have to evacuate. we didn't evacuate right away. and i looked at my window and there was a wall of flames out my window. that's how fast it happened for us. >> reporter: as the flames surrounded them, the pool water seemed their only hope. the pair stripped down, jumped in and spent the next six hours, the entire night, wondering

nbc bay area garvin thomas has been watching with them. he joins us live from santa clara. santa cruz border with the latest on the evacuations. we can see the people behind threw watching the rinl to see what happens garvin. >> reporter: jessica they have been here all day. it's a contradiction that a lot of people face. last thing you want to see is fire. but once your home is evacuated you want to keep an eye on it. for most people they're happy doing it on tv or online. but for some people they want to see in person how much danger their home is in. they couldn't have found a better spot to watch the fire. they couldn't be in a worst predicament because of it. somewhere between this spot on sky line boulevard and the barre bear fire a mile and a half away sit their homes. more than 100 household have been evacuated. some told to leave. others not waiting to be asked. >> i woke up about midnight -- my wife woke me up, oh, you know, blankety blank. >> he snapped a few pictures before leaving his home in the neighborhood. his house stayed on the right side of the flames al

during our 5:00 and 6:00 newscast our garvin thomas showed you live pictures of that firefight. flames surrounding that popular winery. and it remains under threat tonight. >>> berkeley firefighters releasing incredible new video tonight of what they saw the very first night of the north bay fires. members of berkeley engine 6 say they thought they were responding to a grass fire near santa rosa. when they got closer, though, they were surprised to see the glow of flames within city limits. just the beginning of the shock and disbelief. the kmart which they were supposed to use as a staging ground was burning. they ended up near a gas station. it was on fire too. you can hear firefighters in the background wondering why structures were being allowed to burn out of control. well, now it's very understandable. there was nothing anyone could do to stop those flames. too much too fast. the video was shot early monday morning. >>> as we mentioned, that red flag warning still in effect. taking a live look outside san francisco right now. >> and air quality for the greater bay area did
