tod"today in the bay's" garvin thomas has the story that will make you proud. >> reporter: on the campus of san francisco state university, inside their state of the art library, is something obsolete that keeps alex busy. thousands upon thousands of rolls of film, news film, recorded by bay area television stations from the '50s through the '70s. 4,000 hours of bay area history captured at 24 frames a second. >> this film was shot in 1969. i will be the first person very probably to have looked at this film since 1969. >> reporter: the footage housed at the san francisco bay area television archives has been rescued in a way. you see, before recording on video, and later digitally, television news was captured, edited and broadcast on film. that film went from unused to unwatched to unwanted. much of it, perhaps most of it, was just thrown away. >> i went into an archive, and a bunch of film had just been thrown away, because the film was restricting people's access to get to pallets of toilet paper. >> reporter: the archives is dedicated to not just saving the physical film, but uncove

i'm garvin thomas. let's check in with rob mayeda about where the rain is going. >> we waited for the rain to show up, now we're waiting for it to leave. south of san francisco, you can see that line of rain that is pushing through, moving into the northeast heading off to the south and southwest. this is what happens when you have a counterclockwise rotation tracking into central california. right now, page mill road there, near palo alto, into downtown san jose, rain there. the spin to the clouds will track to the south today. hour by hour, going from outright rain to scattered showers around lunchtime. but maybe a lingering shower south into the afternoon. by the evening, skies start to clear. our temperatures will be in the mid-50s around the north bay where we get the clearing first. clearing from north to south during the day. the clouds will linger, highs closer to 50 in san jose today. work week, much warmer changes coming our way. we'll look at that in the seven-day forecast. >> rain got me out

our garvin thomas joins us now with his story. >> janelle, for those 20 years, george maher has volunteeredor the advancement team, double checking applications, filing awards. because of that perhaps no one better knows what it takes to be an eagle scout than george. well, that and the fact he completed all the requirements himself more than 60 years ago. which is why what happened this weekend is so special. and tonight's bay area proud. >> reporter: spend enough time around enough boy scouts like they do at the pacific skyline headquarters in foster city and they say you can always spot the eagles. it's not the pin on the chest or the patch on the sleeve, though. it's something special. on the inside. it's something anyone who's ever known george maher says is inside him. it's why when mark manchester started work here last year and met george, he didn't even ask george if he were an eagle scout. >> i didn't ask if. i just said george, what year did you get your eagle scout? >> and i said it should have been march 10th, 1944. >> reporter: should have because he never officially was an ea
