garvin thomas has a story of a community coming together to help a remarkable man do remarkable things>> reporter: if you had to go through the worst part of your life in order to get to the best, is it still really the worst? chad doesn't have an answer to that quite yet. perhaps because the absolute best part of his journey, chad believes, is ahead of him. his future looked bright and graduated in three years and and it was there that some future demons first got their hooks in to chad. chad ended up living on the street in santa cruz for four brutal years before realizing he did have the strength to fight his way back into society. >> i had to survive. and that was pretty empowering. >> reporter: chad is now a project director for the downtown streets team, a nonprofit with a tremendous track record of getting homeless off the streets and into jobs. still, the amount of good that chad can do here is limited by the amount of time he is spending here. hour upon hour, relying on buses and trains to get to work sites all over the south bay. >> the middle of the day could be in palo alto

garvin thomas has tonight's bay area proud. >> reporter: tina was a san francisco police officer for over 20 years. she says it taught her a lot about dealing with people and getting them to understand the right thing to do, skills she still uses all the time. just in a different venue. making sure her daughter has a future in her favorite sport. if you head into the backyard of the family home in saratoga, be prepared. this is a sport 15-year-old raquel has been doing for years. although mom tina says she's been in the water much, much longer. since she was 4 months old. therapy for her erb's palsy. >> she would fall over, couldn't walk straight, limping. >> reporter: major surgery helped raquel gain range of motion, and swimming has been great for her recovery, not to mention her trophy case. >> my daughter just went crazy, she won gold and silver medals. she was paired in a duet. she was the only girl with a disability on the team. >> reporter: her disability means high level competition like the olympics is out of reach. it was a bitter pill for her and her mom to swallow. >> tha
