. >> let's welcome now to the canadian ambassador to the united states, his excellent gary duer. >> thank very much, mr. shafer, secretary of navy, the governor o'malley, senator, ambassadors, friends. it's wonderful to be here and speak at this beautiful, beautiful historical site. the site, of course, which inspired the "star-spangled banner," a great national anthem in our world. certainly for canada this is a very, very important event to commemorate. we, of course, had this war that began in 1812. some of the skirmishes began before that. we worked together around the world as countries that believe and fight for democracy wherever it's at risk. we certainly know that in our history books we get a little bit of the war of 1812. we hear about the burning of the factory or burning of toronto. we hear about the burning of the white house, but there is much more to this war, much more to this conflict, and much more to the peace that arose from its completion than what is often appreciated in our collective histories. so this commemoration event i think is a wonderful opportunities to co

>>> let's continue our conversation about the keystone xl pipeline, the controversy, ambassador gary duerassador to the united states joins me now. darryl hannah still with us from los angeles. mr. ambassador, let's start with you, a lot of material in the last one, including the fact that canadian ambassadors are going around the world to to get sort of sell everybody on this idea. >> well, the canadian ambassador was in copenhagen, we obviously joined with president obama, committing to the reductions, the greenhouse gas reductions, the same ones, we were in copenhagen talking about how we could reduce greenhouse gas by having light vehicle energy efficiency standards which we've implemented. >> so issue is the production of oil, if you drill the hole in texas for oil, it doesn't, the actual drilling of the oil doesn't produce greenhouse gases, but the argument is that the production of this oil sand, the way to get the oil out of, out of the nugget, out of the sand, uses greenhouse gas because you've got to use natural gas and warm water. more greenhouse gas produced in the production

president, i rise to honor the outgoing canadian ambassador to the united states, gary duer. soon ambassador duer will return home to manitoba, but lucky for us, he will be a frequent visitor to washington, d.c., as the new cochair of the wilson center's canada institute advisory board. we are glad the ambassador will continue to be an influential voice in shaping u.s.-canada relations. over the last six years, i have had the privilege of getting to know the ambassador. i knew he would get along well when i learned that he is a long-time fan of bud grant, an incredible athlete who became the head coach of the minnesota vikings, but from a canadian perspective, he first coached the blue bombers of the canadian football league. bud grant is adored in minnesota and is still adored many, many years since he left coaching. in fact, it was bud grant during this recent play-off game that we remember well in minnesota versus the seahawks where bud grant came out in 17 below zero weather and flipped the coin with no jacket on. what i will also never forget is attending an event at the

ambassador of canada to mexico, and he's already been acknowledged, but my good friend, ambassador gary dueranada's ambassador to the united states. now head of the non-partisan institution, i want the audience to know how impressed i am that prime minister harper chose gary, the former new democratic party premier of manatoba to be the ambassador to this country. such bipartisanship is to be applauded and rare in this country these days. he invited me to lunch at the canadian embassy is few months ago, and in addition to having the most gorgeous embassy in town, he demonstrated an ipad app that shows canada's contribution to the economy of each state and each u.s. congressional district, a great way to show our congress why this relationship matters to their constituents. with me at lunch that day was david beyet, the directer of the wilson center's remarkable canada institute. he worked hard to bring the prime minister here today and all pleased his efforts were successful. one housekeeping note -- after my conversation with the prime minister which should last about 30 minutes of the hour
