and democratic senator gary peters of michigan joins us now. good morning, senator. >> well, good morning. good to be with you. >> good morning, senator! it is a treat of you here, because i kind of align myself with your thinking, sir, about the prospects of the democrats in the united states senate. i think there are a lot of factors in this -- in these various races that are not accounted for in polling, and certainly not accounted for by the political party, my party, when it comes to how to run those races. what's your response to those who are painting this as a fete de complete, that democrats will automatically lose this, that the republicans only need one more pickup, but i have a sense that there's a little bit more at stake here in terms of this effort coming to benefit the democrats than people may realize. >> well, i'm glad you have that view, i think it's an accurate view. we're basically where we always thought we would be. we knew these were going to be really tough races. they're in battleground states, presidential battlegroun

joining us now is gary peters of michigan.rnmental affairs committee and importantly for tonight, he is the chair of the democratic senatorial campaign committee. he is the senator who has been given the political job of saving the united states senate for the democrats. the most difficult political job any senator has ever been given. but senator you have done it before. what do the lessons of two years ago mean for you tonight? >> it is great to be with you lawrence. thank you. we have a lot of lessons from the last race. basically, we are seeing that play out again. we knew the last cycle they would be very close races. all of them within the margin offeror going into the race. we had a very solid ground campaign in all of our campaigns we were able to execute effectively to bring in the votes. all of our races are in the margin of error. the margin of effort we we have to put forward. our candidates are far superiored to flawed republicans. we need to continue to paint that contrast and make sure we are getting every singl

but senator gary peters might like to have a word on that. how can this make a difference? >> these races were always going to be an uphill battle, but i'm glad they are getting this attention and energy, because without control of congress, a potential harris administration wouldn't be very effective in getting a lot done. and so i'm glad that this injection of cash is happening, because it shows momentum. it shows energy. it shows ability and resources to invest in closing messaging and get out the vote campaigns as part of the coordinated efforts in these states and these localities. of course, it doesn't guarantee a win, but it shows democrats have an advantage they can leverage here. my two follow-up questions to this leverage is how much came from within the district and the state that can be translated into more volunteer shifts turning out voters. and the other part is how much are republicans hampered by the fact that the rnc is helping trump out with his legal bills. this is showing the resource suck that donald trump is for that party. >> donald trump has not tra

my first guest is democratic senator gary peters from the all-important battleground state of michigan senator thanks so much for being with us so far in your state. more than 1.1 million people have voted. it's a very tight race there right now. why do you think that is? >> well, we always expected michigan to be a very tight race. we are a battleground state as you know, very well. and by definition that's going to mean it's going to be a very tight race. so this is where i expected that we would be here in michigan. it's close that's why we're working very hard that these next two weeks, we've got very aggressive ground campaign working to knock on doors, get our voters out. but it's going to be it's going to be a close one, but i'm confident kamala harris will win. >> yeah. and center in this final stretch, one of the big story lines has been whether harris has been making headway with groups that traditionally vote democratic. her running mate, governor tim walz, was asked about former president trump's growing support among union voters. if you look at some of the polls, let's li

bipartisan group of lawmakers, republican senator joni ernst and gary peters taking that issue head onre calling the telework transparency act. it would require each federal agency to count how many workers are coming into the office. and answer that question. federal employees need to be held to the highest standards because it's a privilege to serve citizens who utilize government services on a daily basis. it is time for bureaucrats to pull the plug on the bathtub drain and plug back into work. governmentfr one year ago show 24 agency used 25% or less of their office space. other agencies use half. the wall street journal highlighting this, not one of 20 agencies, use half of its office space during a 3-month period according to the office of personal management. the social security administration was essentially a ghost town with 7% of states occupied. that adds up to costs for the taxpayer. federal office space costs $7 billion, obviously streamlining office space disposing of what we don't use could reduce the costs for the taxpayers. i'm asking what about those working from home

joining me now is gary peters. the chair of the democratic senatorial campaign committee.enator, we are one month out from election day. recent polling shows vise president harris is essentially tied with former president trump in your battleground state of michigan. what is your thoughts on where it stands. >> in michigan, it is close. we are a battleground state.tig right now we are basically to the point where it is going to be whoever works the hardest in the next 30 days will win. i am confident of what we have on the ground here. but, certainly we will have to continue to push very hard. we had the vice president in just a couple days ago into the state. i there was for the rally in michigan. the enthusiasm, the excitement that was there. the long lines of folks to get in testimonies you the kind of energy on the ground in michigan and translated to folks going out and working. that is the point we all made. great to rally but now you have to get out and knock doors and talk to your neighbors and that is what will happen between now and election day. >> cases you sta

capitol hill to get government employees to show up to the office to work, a bill introduced by gary petersnst would expose how many federal employees are working for home and how little work on site. senator ernst saying for too long americans have been on hold while bureaucrats phone it in at the expense of the people federal agencies are meant to serve. the government accountable to the office released a report last year detailing how empty federal government buildings are. according to the report, 17 federal agencies only use 25% of their office space during the time they were reviewed but because offices are packed with people doesn't mean a cost any less. 24 federal agencies spend $2 billion a year for federally owned office buildings. and renting buildings they leased. something he pledged to make a top priority. it would trim the fat of bloated bureaucracies. the money being spent is real money. it is a misuse of funds. and with federal state and local government jobs. david: i was waiting to see elon musk riding in on a white horse to see if that happens. former abercrombie and fit

joining us now democratic senator gary peters of michigan.senatorial campaign committee as well as the chair of the senate homeland security committee. your thoughts on this election and the very, very stark difference between the closing arguments that are playing out right now. >> you're absolutely right, the stark differences are very clear to everybody. you know, i was in kalamazoo for that rally. i can tell you democrats are very fired up, they understand what is on the ballot, the stakes of this election, but right now it's incumbent on making sure just everybody gets out to vote and also talk to their friends. right now the most powerful advocate for us are going to be friend discussions where people talk about why it's important, stories that women have, for example, that you mentioned that have gone through some horrible situations not getting reproductive health, we're seeing that in states all across the country. you know, i've been working on these senate races, kamala harris clearly to move the agenda forward that we all want her

gary peters believes texas is a pick up opportunity for them. this race is very close. there is something deeper happening here as well. i have been listening to people all day talking about, democracy an argument? i don't know if democracy is the argument but the economy. but democracy oh. and every place in the south across this country except virginia, if you are a woman and you go into a hospital, an emergency room, an you need emergency care, they are going to give you a pregnancy test. i don't know if people know that. but they give you one whether you ask for one or not before they decide how to treat you. and in every state in the south except virginia, if you are pregnant, there are some treatments you will not be able to receive. even if your life is at stake. that is what we are talking about here. this is not an existential conversation anymore for women across the country. especially women in texas living in ground zero of this for so long. the vice president put a spotlight on this. everyone is excited about beyonce performing but people may have forgotten

it's up to gary peters from michigan, trying to hold on to democratic control of the senate.he democratic senatorial committee. the last time we talked, it was not this tough. in your home state of michigan, for instance, it's a tossup between slotkin, who was comfortably ahead at one point, and rodgers. slotkin said ticket splitters were pivotal to her winning in 2020. is that the path this time, too? >> i believe kamala harris will win in michigan. it's going to be a close race, but i believe she will win. i'm confident slotkin will win. we are where we thought we would be. we knew these would tighten. the ones in battleground states means that those are tight races by definition. it's not a surprise. then we have some tough turf to hold, incumbents in montana and ohio. we are in the fight in both of those states. right now, we are looking at candidate versus candidate battles, superior democrats running against flawed republican challengers. we have a tremendous ground game. it's about turning out voters, identifying them. it's how we won last cycle when no one thought we
