showed you hurricane gaston now. it's a hurricane once again. invest 91l a 30% chance of development heading towards north carolina and invest 99-l a 50% chance of developing in the next five days. we've been watching it several days now and still the potential it could become a named tropical system. gaston will become our strongest of the season so far, up to 110 miles an hour maximum sustained on monday. this is 99-l. tomorrow it moves through the florida straits. likely going to bring gusty winds to south florida. also through the florida keys, good agreement in the next couple of days in south florida. the wind shear finally starts to relax. could see conditions more favorable for development. not a good agreement long term as far as where the system is heading. these lines don't indicate strength. the potential there for it to become a tropical system and head up the florida gulf coast there are solutions that take it out into the central gulf of mexico, something we'll be watching very closely here over the next few days. of course, once

but first, let's check on tropical storm gaston. good morning, leigh spann. >> yes, by far, the tropics are very active. technically three systems out there because there's still fiona to the north. there's tropical storm ga soon. and then we have invest 99l, not technically a tropical system yet but they are expected to fly into it later today and see what they can find. gaston, came a little bit ago at 5:00 a.m., it had 70 miles per hour. meaning it's close to hurricane status and the forecast makes it a hurricane before the afternoon is over. it stays in the atlantic. stay there. and it could be a category two storm. 99l, this has the most potential to have an impact here in the florida. all the models take it into the bahamas and that's when it enters the area where it could strengthen. long term forecast, diverge as to where it's going to head. the european forecast pushing into the bahamas. going across far southern florida and into the gulf of mexico. and then we have the gfs computer model, right into the bahamas, strengthse

as of 5:00 this morning, gaston had 70 miles per hour winds. even by 2:00 today, should be a hurricane. best news of all, the thing stays out to sea. we like that. even if it may become a category two hurricane 99l. in the short term, i don't think it's going to get much stronger. some problems to deal with which is just fine. but late in the week and the early weekend, that's when it will enter the area where it could strengthen. but then they begin to diverge, some along the east coast of florida. something certainly we will pay today, 93 that record 95. in weather and traffic on the 8s, i take you through the wednesday and leslee has the wednesday commute. >>> and we have a problem in pasco county. let's look here. zoom in, you need to know that eastbound we have a delay here approaching 75. down to 31 miles per hour. and that's due to an accident underneath 75 on the eastbound side of state road 52. a little bit slow and westbound not affected. and back to gene and gayle. >>> breaking news, a powerful earthquake shook italy overnight. towns

so, as we track not only gaston which wave heights underneath gaston are 27 feet they do wane quite a bit as they push to the west but we're still seeing increased wave heights philadelphia down to the eastern seaboard and also this is expected to become a tropical storm just off of the carolinas and that will be heading out to sea but it will also add to the swells pushing against the shore line and in fact, that rip current danger is moderate and looks remain that way through much of the week. all those waves pile up against the shore line, what piles up must rush back out somewhere along the coast and that's when a rip current develops. when you see a rip current the water is a little more foggy in nature and if you ever caught in a rip current you do not want to fight it. let it take you out and eventually it is going to ease and then you'll go to the right or to the left of that returned rip current... rip current and ride the wave back to shore. always swim when the beaches are guarded during the day. now that the kids are back to school many of the beaches are not guarded brian

we'll watch that very closel you out to gaston this is tropical storm gaston i think we're on a disney kick here. it wants to become a hurricane as it pushes towards the east of bermuda. remember what happened to fiona it kept jogging farther so gaston looks like it wants to go to the east of bermuda. this takes to you saturday night at 8:00. several days away. out you go in time. temperature high 68 degrees. 58 for new bedford it's cooling. on 53 in keen, new hampshire there will be some upper 40s back here. overnight in gardner going down to 51 degrees. at lunchtime it will be in the 70s. everywhere. high temperatures tomorrow 70s out here in cape cod a couple 80 degree read also be sprinkled in to the north and west they will be in the low 80s and be in the low 80ss from quincy to boston to revere beach also for those beach goers tomorrow. here some of those beaches. wallaceton at 82 degrees, and all of these with lots of sunshine real nice looking day out there. now the winds will be switching to the south by wednesday it will bring in warmer air ahead of a front that will be pushi

that system gaston 105 miles an hour. that not making landfall but sending large waves against the u.s. coastline here with both systems so storm tracker6 live double scan not own dollar we look at the satellite and radar but we look at the wave heights underneath gaston right near the center 30-foot swells but as they propagate towards the shore line of course they weaken. seeing about three to 5-foot swells along our coastline and tropical depression number eight also adding to those swells so that is the concern as we go through the rest of this week and even into the upcoming labor day weekend. all that water that piles up along the shore, what piles up must pull back out and that's what creates some of these rip currents. if you are ever to be caught in a rip current you let it take you out and you want to fight it but don't fight it let it take you out because it eventually will ease and then you can escape to the left or to the right and ride the waves in but the biggest thing you want to do only swim where the bea

gaston the hurricane. the good news, way out in the ocean and not an issue for us, except to throw some waves and swells back toward boaters our way in the next couple of days. then there's this system, prolific rain over cuba, another tropical looking system trying to get its waves to the gulf of mexico and form into something. and when i say that water in the north carolinas, that isn't the only one to watch. be scooped up and pushed our way, not as a tropical storm or hurricane, but as some rain. that's why that labor day weekend forecast has to be watched so closely. temperatures in the 70s by lunchtime tomorrow. yup, only 70s, into the low 80s most places tomorrow. wollaston to 87 degrees tomorrow. caution flag, on thursday a front comes through, a couple of showers. that front will keep out in the carolinas away from us, the way i look at it right now. uncertain toward the end. we have to wait to see what the tropical systems to our south will be doing. i'll get the latest model in a few minutes and

first, gaston. looks like it would stay a tropical storm and then rapidly intensify into a category 2 not a concern. this one is something we're watching more closely. the hurricane hunter aircraft flew. they weren't out there very long. they didn't find an organized center of circulation and you need that to upgrade to a named system. they did find 45-mile-per-hour winds. so what about the computer models. let's talk about what the update s over the next 48 hours through the bahamas north of the caribbean. there's a consensus on. that the question is will it get upgrade. will that center of circulation develop. that's something we'll have to wait and see. after that, you see how the models fade out, that's telling us there's uncertainty. without that center of circulation we'll have to wait another day or two. we've got small rain chances and, again, guys, our hottest day 93 on saturday. tomorrow morning our last cool morning before the mugginess returns. >> you dave us the full forecast. i still d

hurricane gaston, tropical depression number 8 and tropical depression number 9. that one, formerly known as -- formerly known as invest 99 l. i want to show you the track of these. hurricane gaston is a major hurricane -- hurricane, category three of wins up to 115 miles per hour. this is well east of bermuda and will continue to go out to see. not affecting us in the eastern coast of the u.s. but we will see some of those churning waters and riptide risks. making landfall. tropical depression 8, this one off the coast of the scare -- of the carolinas. this one could affect the outer banks of the tropical storm and it may head out to see. there is still some uncertainty if i could track close to new england. we will update you on that. with those two storms, increased surf and rip current risk. tropical depression 9, max winds of 35 miles per hour between cund the exact track. it is going to have that boomerang effect and move toward jacksonville, fl toward the end back of the week. very interesting. we will keep you updated but very heavy rain moving towards flo

later information on hurricane gaston, still 75 miles per hour winds. it should weaken by to a tropical storm and then strengthen again but it stays out to sea. and now let's focus on the one that has more impact on a lot of land masses. right now, 45 miles per hour winds and pretty sure it's going to head right into the bahamas. that's what every model says. the problem s once it gets into -- the problem is, once it gets into the bahamas, it will have the possibility of strengthening quickly and we don't like that because it's close to florida. saturday afternoon, most of the models take it through south florida and into the gulf of mexico. which would increase our rain chances locally. of course, how big those rain chances are and how big the effects will be determined by the eventual track as well as how strong that system is. of 92 degrees. that's above average. so at 5:08, i have an hour-by- hour look at today so you can plan it out in weather and traffic on the 8s. and leslee has the commute. >>> which is good. thank you for the dry roads. everyth

let's talk about gaston. we do expected to eventually, after friday the late part of the week or early next week, become our third hurricane of the season staying in the north atlantic and not impacting us but the other system could impact us and that is why the national hurricane center continues to investigate this with the hurricane hunter aircraft work they did not find a close -- closed circulation but they did find a 55 mi./h wind. the moment they do find that circulation, we could have right, that is almost 1000 miles across and way too big. like an ice skater trying to do one of those really fast twist with their arms way out. have to pull those arms in if they want to twist fast work this will have to pull itself together a little more if it wants to develop so that is what we're waiting for and that is what we are watching. the computer models remains the -- throughout friday but after the we can, they start to spread out a little and that tells us there is uncertainty and that is why we will have t

gaston was a category 3 now it's a category 2. it's pushing the swell across the western atlantic and into the shoreline. be careful today and tomorrow as well. this tropical depression popped up over the weekend. you might have missed it. it's a couple of hundred miles away from cape hatteras and moving toward the coast. tropical depression 9 is moving toward cuba. as for this one it will come close to cape hatteras anded picked up by the cold front right in through here and shoved off the coast. it will keep the rip currents going. that will be passing us by wednesday into thursday night. there are the computer plot models on this one, they are in agreement. we have a high level of confidence with that one. the next storm to the south will become a tropical storm and curve to the issue and be an issue for the northern half of florida and southern tip of georgia sometime during the day on thursday, when you look at the model projections on this one, they are all over the place. we are going with the general idea, but other soluti

but here is hurricane gaston, way out over the open waters of the atlantic, but still turning up the surf here. then you have got tropical depression number eight off the carolina coast, tropical depression number nine also out there. thankfully, in short, none of these systems is expected to have any direct impact to our area. but the indirect impact definitely poses a threat, too. you get these larger swells, churning again, churning up the surf here at the immediate coastline, with the potential for strong rip currents. and we'll have more on how you can break away, from a rip current, if you ever catch yourself caught in one, but in short, you definately need to be swimming near the lifeguards in the days ahead. taking a look at the area temperatures, we into the 80s currently, pretty much everywhere, we're at 72 degrees mount pocono, kind of the oddball out of this set of observations, but generally speaking, it is a nice, warm and sunny, also, thankfully, not too muggy of an afternoon. we wrap up the month of august. something that's going to change in time, but enjoy it, it re
