back to georgetown. georgetown college and the maryland jesuits continued to be involved with slavery after 1838, despite the sale of most of the slaves to louisiana. not all of the jesuit slaves were sent to louisiana, some managed to escape being sold, literally by escaping. in 1867 census of slaves emancipated in maryland in 1864 shows one family of slaves in st. mary's parrish headed by a woman named louisa mason owned by the corporation of roman catholic clergy men. i think the last of the maryland jesuit slaves. slaves continued to provide labor at the college and students from slave owning families continued to attend georgetown. georgetown colleges' southern orientation explains why the majority of georgetown students and alumni who fought in the civil war fought for, guess which side, the confederacy. they fought for a short lived nation whose cornerstone was slavery. it was really after the war that georgetown's ties to slavery got buried in the landscape of memory. i'll give you two examples o

police are on a manhunt for a man who kidnapped a georgetown student. police say he took that student through finley town and bethesda. this was a criminal dressed like a businessman. >> reporter: that suspect took the georgetown student to several different atms and two stores to try to get him to take out money or purchase items using his credit card. this is all according to d.c. police who also caught video of the suspect and victim here. the victim's identity is being protected. you can see the suspect is in a suit and tie. d.c. police tell us all of the transactions were declined. thankfully, the victim wasn't hurt after that. this all started in georgetown by 34th plus say the suspect stopped the victim and asked him for money. when the student hesitated, the suspect grabbed him by the arm and forced him into his silver or light-gray suv. the police report says this happened in broad daylight thursday at 3:20 in the afternoon. it has a lot of students shaken up. you will hear from them later tonight. stephanie ramirez, wusa9. >>> i want to show y

i am a student at georgetown university and organizer with georgetown solidarity committee in one dc. i'm here today to talk about my students organized through the extremist right and struggle for justice on campus and in our communities. progressive and radical students at the university, it is an important site of struggle, a place that had enormous potential to create and disseminate knowledge and promote or distort truth in a way that ripples throughout society was the ultra right has realized the power held at the university and has increasingly mobilized bastardized arguments about free speech to gain access to the institution. progressive and radical students must contest this speech at every turn, organize ourselves into the difficult work of organizing our liberal peers to keep bigots and right-wing extremists out of our universities, while also challenging the reactionaries who come from within. to give the extremist right even an inch will normalize their rhetoric and popularize their goals. do not fall for their argument, they deserve no safe space for the violent, racist
