georgia. please welcome back to "a late show," stacey abrams! thank you so much for being here! democratic party to succeed to have victory in the state of georgia. are you allowing yourself time to celebrate right now, or is there too much work to be done? >> i had about 17 minutes on saturday afternoon, i'm good. >> stephen: that's all you need? >> now get back to work. we have to win two senate races, i can't goggle too long. >> stephen: i'm going get to that in a home but i'll dwell on this a moment more. >> okay. >> stephen: biden is said to be the first presidential candidate to win georgia since 1992. you're being credited for your get out of vote effort, your organizing of georgia. how did you do it? >> i want to make sure we give credit to the groups that have been working on this a long time. my part is when i began, i wanted to focus on making sure we were in every single county, and i advanced that into multiple cycles. in 2018 i raised $4 million for my gubernatorial race and we kept raising money after i lost to keep focusing on teaming this infrastructure in place

they believe it is a done deal with the recount happensjoe biden will still win georgia. staceyion. people here feel that she was robbed of the election and she went back to work and fight be verified and some say they registered as many as over 100,000 voters and they say they are working to make sure people turned out to vote on that runoff. —— over 800,000 voters. so the democrats can get control of the senate. thank you, larry. what kind of relationship is president electjoe biden likely to have with borisjohnson? the uk prime minister said today that he was looking forward to working with mr biden on climate change — as well as on international trade — and security. but as our diplomatic correspondent james landale reports there are some tricky issues ahead. from the days of margaret thatcher, joe biden has been no stranger to britain, making it his business to know the prime ministers of the day. at least, until now. for borisjohnson has yet to meet the president—elect and the two men have their differences. mr biden has described the pm as a "physical and emotional clone"

if it were not for a coordinated republican effort to suppress democratic votes in georgia, stacey abrams said she would be governor today, but her race was not in vain. the grassroots work that she did in georgia during and after her campaign helped cement the right to vote for everyone in georgia to stop what happened to her from ever happening again. it is this woman's work that has been credited with helping joe biden win the state of georgia this year. joining me now, stacey abrams, the former georgia gubernatorial candidate and founder of fair fight action. ms. abrams, good to see you, and welcome to the show. >> thank you for having me. >> let's talk about the strategy heading into these two runoffs. there's nothing to celebrate yet in georgia. we've got the presidential election largely behind us, but for a certification and an audit issue. but there are two very serious senate races that are going to happen on january 5th. what's the strategy? >> well, first, we have to celebrate what we accomplished in november because that's one of the reasons we have a pathway in january. we h

the former governor candidate in georgia, stacey abrams, listed for attorney general? mean, that's enough to scare the life out of anyone, we need to help these two candidates win these seats in georgia. the republican seats. >> harris: you mentioned stacey abrams, and look at what she has been able to deliver for democrats, just in georgia alone. as you see the tightening of this presidential race down there still, this many days later. i want to get to this. fox news headline read, "democrats urging voters to move to georgia before the senate runoff election." is it fraud? and former democratic president -- go ahead and answer to that, and i'll get to the next one. take that down off the screen, let's go back to the senator. let's just get your reaction to the first one. >> it is fraud to have people move to georgia, register to vote, vote, and then leave. if people are planning to make it their home, and the law is pretty clear on that, then they are eligible to vote. but it sounds like the democrats are recruiting people, and you just saw tom friedman of "the new yo

it's tomorrow or next week, the result will be the same, that joe biden has won the state of georgia. >> staceymer georgia house minority leader and 2018 gubernatorial nominee saying essentially recount schmecount and projecting confidence that in the end, biden will have won georgia. meanwhile, the trump campaign doubled down on unfounded claims of voter fraud and just today filed a new lawsuit in pennsylvania claiming mail-in ballots are unconstitutional and asking the judge to block pennsylvania from certifying the results. it cannot be said often enough that so far the trump campaign has not provided any evidence of voter fraud, which might explain why the courts have been swatting away these lawsuits like flies. and if pennsylvania's attorney general's response is any measure, this new lawsuit may meet a similar fate. pennsylvania attorney general josh shapiro tweeting about what he calls the latest meritless lawsuit to challenge pennsylvania's election, which was overseen by bipartisan officials and was lawful, fair and secure. for months, the majority of these lawsuits have been dismisse

>> yeah, look, a couple of things about georgia. stacey abrams deserves dispro portional credit. how are republicans going to do if donald trump isn't on the ticket. the senate hangs in the balance. the stakes are high. obviously usually special elections in the south revert to the runs off, they would tend to tilt republican, but this is going to be a test of that major get out the vote operation that democrats and stacey abrams have built. they're building off a win, apparently, and that's a big motivator, this is going to be an epic race. >> the president seems to have a unique grip on his supporters. consider this, look at this map. this is the map of the election. red states, blue states, now take a look at the coronavirus map. the hardest hit areas, right, the places where the virus is just waging are the areas that actually voted for the president in spite of the super spreader rallies, in spite of the job losses and deaths and pleas of people to listen to doctors and wear a mask. a pandemic that has killed a quarter million americans won't change people's minds, what will

roughly 5 million voters showed up and over 6 million registered voters in georgia. staceylion for the runoffs in georgia. can they get their numbers up, particularly in those expanding and diversifying suburbs of atlanta? both sides will make their arguments to drive out their base but a big question who turns out to the polls and who gives the majority to which party come january. >> the two incumbent senators who are up for re-election in january for the special elections, they are now attacking the election integrity republican election officials in georgia. that seems potentially unwise. they want republicans to turn out in droves and have confidence in the system. >> yeah. all along, these two senators perdue and loeffler have been aligning themselves very closely to president trump and loeffler is 100% pro trump and argued in november and david perdue skipped a debate with his opponent jon osshoff to appear with donald trump before the november elections. clearly here they are siding with the president's claims that this election was rigged, was stolen but a remarkab

stacey abrams' leadership. she was moving around the country in other states teaching what she did in georgia. we've clearly seen that, that imagery that professor cobb so beautifully put is really what happened here. >> no, i think that that's so right. and that was a post that i -- that really resonated with me. and it sort of informed me in the last moments before i just had a piece come out in "the times" that -- about how america -- i love america but we -- it needs some chastisement, right now. because black people are always called to drag democracy back from the brink. and then, the party that we vote with doesn't always serve us. but part of that is because, the party on the other side is pulling so hard against our lives. and so, one of the calls that i make in my article is for the republican party to abandon all of these hate groups. all of this language of hate. david brooks had that a couple days ago how we need to make it about policy again. but for me, the cultural issues are policy when policies of the right put my life at stake. when black lives mattering is a practical, poli

when it comes to voting by mail, that's the end of the republican party, and let it start in georgia, folks. stacey abrams is trying to take over the election system in georgia. fight back. >> sean: by the way, you had more money thrown at you from people outside of south carolina, rosie o'donnell, we talked a lot about it. people of south carolina weren't influenced. now, on the money from hollywood, hollywood telling people to move there, which would be voter fraud, and all this money is going to be pouring into georgia. now, both those races matter, perdue and loeffler, i am concerned people looking at this schiff show, a governor and secretary of state have no urgency about it, they didn't get it right this time, i think the secretary of state owes everybody inin the country an answer, why we've got 2700 new ballots today, 2600 yesterday, why there are two -- why don't they check this di the signaturo in-store confidence in our election? >> as georgia goes, the nation goes, democrats calling for people calling for people to move to georgia for the express purpose of winning, i had money coming

the governor of georgia, stacey abrams basically told me so already. ically she is the governor of georgia divisive venezuela? i met george at. divided for him today, the incumbent senator, he's g.o.p., everybody is now going to be looking at georgia. stacey the late show wit"the late show with stephen colbert." it's about saving democracy. mitch mcconnell is not a good leader, he is not a good man and we cannot withstand former years of blocking and denying the needs of americans. how did those two races go down? >> well, first and foremost, stacey abrams' message lies, lies, lies, leader mcconnell has in a tactician in terms of making sure the senate operates appropriately. he's been a great leader for a lot of republicans who raised money across the country. here's the interesting thing about this atlanta -- or rather this georgia race. the polls are almost about split when it comes to the candidates but they are going to tighten up very, very soon and considering the fact that this particular democratic nominee, he would rely on black support, support from young folks, that support usually tips -- or rather drops down when it comes to nonpresidential races, so that's going to be an interesting dilemma, not to mention the fact that rep

likewise in my home state of georgia, stacey abrams did a great job of leaning georgia to the blue columntaying as a republican state. i think we are looking at the battle of the sun belt versus the rust belt and looking at the sun belt states and looking at florida, north carolina, arizona. those are very tight. i see trump bringing those home on election day but the rust belt states, i think the trump campaign has a little bit more of a challenge. we are looking at pennsylvania, wisconsin, and michigan. we know pennsylvania has been, for the democratic candidates the last six presidential elections until 2016 for trump so it is an uphill battle with joe biden going there before election day to make the closing argument. it will help to bring the democrats to his side. i do see president trump having a good day on election day with regard to these sun belt states. these numbers are super close and very tight and they have a good ground game and i see them turning folks out in these key states. >> to that point, paul, democrats in many places not at all but many places are encouraged by t

georgia agree with stacey abrams. there is a lawsuit by lynn woods in georgia contesting those decisions. why were signature requirements loosened? i believe in the resurrection. but dead people voting? i don't think so. like the mother who swore that her dead son was indeed dead but he voted twice. i don't think so, and neither did she. those voting machines created by dominion, that is yet to come. the left talked about bringing the country together after they created four years of chaos, accusing trump of sowing doubt in our democracy. saying questioning this election is a danger to america. and that the election process being changed in the middle of an election is no big deal and a little fraud is no big deal. and they cast it as a temper tantrum by us. really? we are the ones having the tantrum? the question is, will any of these allegations affect a sufficient number of votes to change the result of the election? if the answer is president trump did not win, then on january 20, joe biden will be my president. bu

georgia result of that, that over time doing work but there are women in positions of leadership, looking at who leads the democratic party, newly congresswoman williams who leads the democratic party, people like staceys diligent about building an infrastructure in the state, leading groups on the ground from the new georgia project, the peoples agenda, what we're seeing is black women have been stepping up in leadership and various roles in the campaign on the partisan side, the nonpartisan side, political strategy and leadership and that is going to make a difference. what we have been seeing and talking to folks is that it's not centered just around the candidates but while trump is not on the ticket but we know that health care is on the ticket and a state with poor leadership with covid-19 and we have been impacted you a, our community. >> listen to the black women on the ground, folks just like you in the state of georgia. >> i was surprised it took so long but i wasn't surprised that it happened. and i won't be surprised if what happens in january. >> this women that are really driving this ground game. >> do you think that black women are the one that is flipped the state of georgia? >> we ar

georgia. this is stacey abrams -- has never been under a bigger spotlight. talk a little bit about what that contest is going to look like, 700,000 new voters were registered through the god-blessed work of stacey abrams and her organization. can that be replicated as you're looking at it on the ground in georgia in january? >> well, i think it absolutely can. georgia, atlanta in particular are no stranger to runoffs. the atlanta mayor's race has been a runoff for the past several cycles. black voters are used to hunkering down, circling back, to do what needs to be done in atlanta. and i think that georgia, you know, with its newfound swagger as a battleground state can continue to be competitive straight through january. it is going to be largely because of the work of the black women who in the centennial year of suffrage, 55 years after the voting rights act, are absolutely flexing their power and letting it be known that they are a force to be recenkon with in this democratic process. at the top of that list is absolutely stacey abrams who had the visio

georgia blue. many credit stacey abrams for paving the way. met abrams when she was a candidate for georgia's governor. now, despite a controversial loss, she became a leading voice on voting rights as the head of fair fight, an effort to curb voter suppression. >> we have been working at this for more than a decade and there have been dozens of organizations and hundreds of people who have made this their primary mission. i've been privileged to be able to bring to bear resources, both before the election of 2018 and then the $40 million we were able to spend in 2018 to build a democratic infrastructure. soledad: the loyalty of the black female vote also flipped the battle ground states -- wisconsin, pennsylvania, and michigan. last year on visit to detroit, we talked to black women about the power of their vote. our special correspondent joie chen reports. ♪ joie: the rich, red georgia clay once grew rich fields of cotton and a comfortable life for families like grace allen's. but in the early 1950's, they, like so many others, moved north,

georgia in 2017 special election for a congressional seat. you saw it then. you saw the possibility then the next year staceyfor governor and she really showed us. she really showed the national media in the way that your single congressional district race couldn't what the statewide possibilities were in georgia. what did you learn from the stacey abrams campaign for governor? >> well, even before her gubernatorial run, stacey was deeply engaged in the work of voter registration, organizing and training volunteers to mobilize and reach out to communities that hadn't heard from candidates or campaigns in a very long time. then of course my 2017 special election, which really woke up the nation to the changes that were occurring in this state. a state as i mentioned that's been getting younger and more diverse year by year. then stacey's historic run in 2018. each of these huge battles, win or lose, has been worth what we have built in the process. and now here in georgia we stand poised to deliver the senate majority with two u.s. senate run-offs. remember, it's two run-offs here, lawrence, that will determi

georgia in terms of the presidential. i'm not convinced that we will lose those seats to the democrats. it is a poenlts, bssibility, but convinced. and to your point, stacey abrams has moved mountains to help energize the democratic party and as well as the "black lives matter" group, and their organizational skills in georgia starting when stacey abrams ran for on governor. it has been tremendous. but the republicani party in go is still looking to galvanize, they will put boots on the ground and every effort they can possibly do to keep those seats republican. i think that is critical. because it is important to keep i think for the balance of power and for democracy in this country to have divided government. i think america will be better with joe biden in the white house and democrats controlling the house that we need the republicans to control the senate to keep the balance of power. and republicans in georgia will work extremely hard to make sure that that is the case. >> you all of a sudden, your home state became the center of the political universe for the next nine weeks, that is for sure. we have to leave it there, but you we'll have you back

suppression may have been at play in stacey abrams loss, and they want to make sure black voters turn out in high numbers here. they make up 30% of the electorate here in georgiage slice, and we saw those voters break for president obama about 98% to 2. that number ticked down whenever hillary clinton ran in 2016. but when stacey abrams ran it ticked back up, and that is what folks are hoping to see this time around. i should point out, just as we have been with these canvassers today, there was a woman who stopped them in the street and said i requested my absentee ballot a month ago and still have not received it. i have an expired i.d. i'm not going to be able to vote on election day if i don't have that absentee ballot. she was very upset trying to figure out what she could do to make sure her voice was heard. organizations like the new georgia project, like stacey abrams organization fair fight have been on the ground here for years registering hundreds of thousands of new black voters who were energized to vote and hoping to really have an impact on this election here in georgia. chuck. >> i'm curious, one of the -- doing the canvassing in the midst of t

teresa: we have another question asks, how have activists like stacey abrams in georgia helped your efforts in driving black voters to the polls in battleground states this election cycle? stacey is a close friend who did a phenomenal job. the job she did is prior to anybody knowing who she was outside of georgia. she has come a long way, but i allk stacey and naacp were part of the same role. one thing we try to do as an organization is move away from the savior mentality when it is this person or that person, when it is all of us. it gives all of us an opportunity to do what john lewis did. he was an ordinary person who did extraordinary things. we all have that capacity. so as we look towards a collective approach to make society better, let's recognize that we all have that ability. covid cases are rising throughout the country. and the death rate has risen, as well. or the numbers of people who have been killed by the virus. how covid-19about has increased racial disparities and structural bias against black communities? what has the naacp done to help alleviate issues in health care?

georgia this year. joining me now, stacey abrams. the founder of fair fight action. miss abrhams, good to see you and welcome to the show. >> thank you for having me. >> let's talk about the strategy heading into the two run-offs. there is nothing to celebrate in georgia. we have the presidential election behind us. a certification and an audit issue. there are two serious senate races that are going to happen on january 5th. what is the strategy? >> first, we have to celebrate what we accomplished in november. we have to remind voters they can start with absentee ballots. we can win it again in january. we have to remind voters what the senate does and why it is so critical that they represent the state of georgia and help to determine the future of the country. we know the strategy is to educate voters about the two candidates and to raise the level of resources that we need to reach pockets of the state of georgia that don't believe in their power to be heard. we need to do the work of making sure that we protect the right to vote. we are watching the two sitting
