we learned gerald vilabrila shot out a lock on a random house to get inside. fortunately nobody was home. once inside, police tried to get the suspect to speak to them. he refused so they fired tear gas into the home. the suspect then called 911 and initially told police he had a hostage. however, officers later determined there was no hostage inside and continued negotiat n negotiations for several hours before firing a second round of tear gas into the home. that second round is what started the fire. >> we made rescue attempts, repeated rescue attempts, to get into the house, but he had barricaded himself into a location that we were unable to safely get to. >> reporter: the suspect's body was found inside the burned home. police also recovered the gun that they believe he used to shoot the two officers. now, as for the couple who owns the home, they came back during the siege but were kept away by police for obvious reasons. unfortunately, though, the family dog was inside the home as it burned. we're live this afternoon, i'm chris nguyen, abc 7 news. >> c
