david gergen, you just wrote about this. you just tweeted philadelphia shows us the waves of gun violence continue unabated. in two years time we are losing more americans to gun violence than died in vietnam. so the president says he's going to do something and mitch mcconnell says this is front and center. should we believe them? >> not very much. the rhetoric is nice, but let's see the action and so far we've seen very little action. the pattern we all know is a big shooting takes place, kids are killed, it speck the interest in the country, everybody is very upset, we get promises from politicians and promises from the white house and then nothing really happens. and until we deal with this in a serious way, we have more guns in this country than we have people. we're one of the most blood thirsty nations on the earth. until we deal with that and we continue losing people, we're going to raise a generation of kids who are scared to go outside, scared to go into their schools. is that some kind of legacy? >> right. so wel

democratic strategist, aish a moody mills and david gergen who has seen more campaigning from the insides. kirsten, is this fair game in your mind for democrats or does it risk fracturing the party? >> well, it's fair game. it's not out of bounds. i'm just not sure it's productive. so certainly president obama, when he was running for office, he was, you know -- and he was running against hillary clinton in the primary, he had no problem criticizing things that happened in the clinton administration. and i think that it's fine to have some criticisms. but i would do it in a different way. i would treat it -- i think the democrats would be well served to say, we want to build on the successes that obama had versus saying -- sort of treating it as though these successes didn't occur. and even the way they've portrayed his immigration policy, which i had a lot of criticism for at the time, you still have to recognize what he was dealing with, right? that he had a republican congress, for example, that he actually did do some good things such as the dreamers act. so instead, you know, you ha

outfront now, cnn david gergen, presidential adviser to four presidents, sam vein he grad. presidential history yn tim naftali. thank you for being here. david, the fact that the news is coming out just hours before he is set to leave, i just wonder what does that say? >> nothing good. nothing good. kate, i first went to g-7 meetings some 40 years ago, president reagan. they started under president ford back in the mid-70s. every president i know has had a really top person within the administration serve as a sherpa, writing up communiques in advance trying to get agreements in advance. every president taking the meetings very, very seriously. and today, you know, as president trump gets ready to leave, i must tell you i cannot remember a g-7 meeting when so much was needed from world leaders and so little is expected. >> that is a great way of putting it, david. that's a great way of put going, so much on the line and there is so low expectations, sam of what's actually coming out of it. obviously world leaders are now aware of the president's feelings towards the summit

cnn political analyst david gergen presidential adviser to four presidents. you know people who have been through the sort of dramatic transformations. but david the big question is when you see the surge in the polls, and it's her tax, tax, you know, the wealthy and the billionaires and the companies line that worked for many. could her conservative roots hurt her? >> i don't think so, because it's a political odyssey that others have made. her political hero in life she said publicly is teddy roosevelt. and teddy roosevelt started in a republican family, very much for free markets but understood that the trusts were really threatening. and he went -- he went after them in his presidency. that's what he was known for. in our own time max contributor, max boot has book about why i left the right. about his odyssey away from conservativism. back in the 80s we had had what we call the neoconservatives, bill crystal's father irving crystal, ben watten rk and nathan. and they were liberals who went conservative. particularly conservative on international policy.
