aaron gilchrist has a look at the possible outcomes.good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. this morning the jury will begin considering a wide range of charges that could lead to vastly different punishments for george huguely. now both the prosecution and the defense have specific outcomes that they're aiming for. prosecutors argue george huguely should be found guilty of first-degree murder. for that outcome, prosecutors would have to have proved that huguely intended to harm yeardley love, and according to the law, intent can be formed in an instant. that conviction carries a possible sentence of life in prison. the defense, on the other hand, admits that huguely did play a role in love's death. but he thought she was alive when he left her apartment and did not intend to harm her. so they say because of that they want jurors to consider a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter which would carry a maximum sentence of ten years in prison. now there are several other outcomes that the jury could consider here. another offer

aaron gilchrist is at the superscreen with more. >> reporter: that bill passed with a narrow 25-22 votee maryland state senate. it sets maryland up to become the eighth state along with d.c. to legalize gay marriage. governor o'malley has already said that he will sign the bill into law as soon as it hits his desk. there are opponents of the bill, though, who say that they will stop same-sex marriage from becoming law and force the issue to a statewide referendum. now in order for that to happen, opponents have to collect more than 55,000 signatures by july 1. if they can do that, which is widely expected to happen, a question will appear on the ballot on november 6, that's election day. it will ask all maryland residents whether same-sex marriage should be legalized. right now, polls show that marylanders are evenly split on the issue, but if it passes in referendum, gay marriage would become law effective january 1 of next year. now those who are in favor of a referendum have already set up a web site, mdpetitions.com. they're asking people who would be interested in signing to go ahe

aaron gilchrist is at the super screen with a look at closures you could run into. >> metro is usinghe long weekend to do major track work. three stations will be closed on two different lines. first let's talk about the orange line. you will find that on that particular line, the clarendon and the courthouse stations will close at 10:00 tonight for some switch work there. metro providing free shuttle buses between rosslyn and virginia square stations on the orange line and get you around those closures. the other closures are going to be on the red line. and what you will find is that you won't have access to the stations at grovener. that will be closed to improve cell phone service. all of these stations will close tonight at 10:00 and then you won't see them reopening until tuesday morning at rush hour because the presidents' day holiday is on monday. metro will be on a weekend schedule on monday. now back to you. >> okay. thank you, aaron. several virginia roads will soon have new route numbers. three local parkways have been wrup graded from secondary to primary routes. the pri

aaron gilchrist has the possible outcomes. >> reporter: this morning the jury will consider a wide range of charges that could lead to vastly different punishments for george huguely. both the prosecution and defense are aiming for specific outcomes here. prosecutors want george huguely to be found guilty of first-degree murder. for that to be the outcome in this case, the jury would have to agree that huguely intended to kill yeardley love. by the definition of the law, that intent can be formed in an instant. that conviction carries a possible life sentence. the defense, on the other hand, does admit that huguely played a role in love's death, but he thought she was alive when he left her apartment and did not intend to kill her. because of that, they argue jurors should consider a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter which would carry a maximum sentence of ten years. there are several other outcomes that the jury can consider. another offered by the prosecution is felony murder. murder without the intent but committed during a separate felony. in this case, prosecutors argue that

aaron gilchrist is at the news4 super screen with more. >> the visit to this area really is a big chance for the republican candidates to touch the core of their base. it started this morning with mitt romney in virginia and a traditionally republican state that voted for president obama in the last election. mitt romney was at a breakfast in northern virginia and fairfax county this morning with virginia governor bob mcdonnell. . it whooesed by the morning virginia technology council and consumer electronics association. this was an opportunity for him to talk to business leaders and the heart of the innovation community. he really zeroed in on what he believes it will take to encourage business growth and development ultimately, he says, to make america a more formidable competitor in the global economy. romney wants to see a culture shift in regulation and opening of energy resources and opening of markets for american goods as well as lower corporate tax rate. >> you have to have a tax structure to take risk starting a business or taking innovation is risky. there has to be an incent

aaron gilchrist joins from us the super screen with more details now. >> reporter: the necessities of war forced women to the frontlines for years now often as medics or intelligence officers. now the pentagon wants to make that official. since 1994, women have only been allowed to serve in brigades. roughly 3500 troops. well, this new recommendation would change that. it would allow women to be signed to a battalion. roughly 800 service members. the army and the marine corps would likely feel this -- impact the most here. they ban women from more jobs than the air force and the navy. and special forces units like navy s.e.a.l.s would still be off-limits for women. this long standing opposition for women's roles stem from questions over strength and stamina and whether women could hurt cohesion. officials also fear that public reaction to too many women being killed in combat may be a problem. the thousands of women have served in iraq and afghanistan. and more than 150 of them have died. barbara. >> thank you, aaron. the military is getting healthier today first lady michelle obama a

aaron gilchrist is at the news4 super screen more on what's happening.rning. >> reporter: good morning. this is a deal with the trump organization that will turn the old post office pavillion into a luxury hotel. something like the plaza hotel in new york, if you're familiar with that. now the old post office pavillion is actually on the national register of historic places, and it sits on pennsylvania avenue between the white house and the capitol. if you look at this, you see the ronald reagan building here, pennsylvania avenue up there. 12th street along here. several hotel groups vied for the contract including hilton which wanted to turn this into something like a waldorf astoria. the trump plan won out, though. his group will transform this space into more than 250 rooms, world-class restaurants, a spa, and conference facilities, as well. the hope is to make it a world-class destination while preserving the building's iconic features and the history. the general services administration selected this proposal. they released a statement that said in
