what if the incumbent, mayor lisa gillmor, loses here. there's some real issues about the optics of this. do the 49ers essentially run city hall is what a lot of people will be asking. >> some people wonder if it's becoming a company town. 49ers gave $3 million last year. it's a small city relatively, 120,000 people. 4.5 million this year. over a million and a half of that going right to the mayor's race. and lisa gillmor holding on by just a few hundred votes. you kind of wonder if the 49ers ought to be in politics to the extent that they are. i'll tell you one thing. this is going to be an issue that doesn't go away, especially if all those dollars changes the complexion of city government in santa clara. there will be people kind of scratching their heads over this, and it's worthwhile for discussion. >> yeah, the politicians, those names change but the 49ers aren't going away. that's certainly the truth. the sheriff's race now, santa clara county, another close one. whoever takes over this job takes over a department with a lot of dra

now santa clara here, lisa gillmor, running for the election, says, it's time to start the bay-areawideask force. >> the one here saturday night with 700 people, we can have a handful of officers handle that. we need help from a regional agency. >> reporter: the mayors of fremont and milpitas say, they're on board, suggesting combining resources and even set up an agreement to have officers respond outside their jurisdiction to shut the streets' sideshows down. that's important, since most police department say, it's hard to make arrests at the event, because there are often hundreds of spectators and participants. they say, it's the same groups showing up all over the bay. >> working with other cities, we can see some of the issues that we're following.also, i think that technology is very important for our city, much like some other ones. we have leaders on the off- ramps and on-rams. >> reporter: that's fremont leader, willie mays, growing list of communities, like hers, with sideshows. the state law signed last year also allows judges to suspend a drivers license for up to six month

becker is in the closest race in the south bay, trailing incumbent lisa gillmor. in one recent count, by less th 170 votes. >> so, one, it's nerve-racking. it's nervous. i know that probably my opponent's feeling the same thing. so i think we're both in the same both. >> reporter: gillmor declined to comment. at this point, the total ballot count is just above 51%. the registrar's office says the public may not realize how much goes into processing each ballot once signatures are verified and then opened. >> they have to go through the machines to precinct to identify the ballots that are for each precinct. then it goes to adjudication. it can go through duplications, a lot of different steps before it gets to the ballot counting room before they feed the ballots in the machine and the results come out. >> if you have to do a recount, same thing? >> same process. >> reporter: becker knows all too well a recount is triggered when only 0.25% separates candidates. >> relishing a recount? >> yes, relishing that thought. hopefully we will have to go to that. but if not
