you know, beto, stacy and gillum, mayor gillum, they are part of the obama continuum, right? and to a certain extent, part of the dino bama continuum, -- dean obama continuum. joy was spot on. we've seen establishment democrats trying to run races where they try to win over republican voters. last time in georgia, we lost by 200,000 votes trying to do that. this time around it is very much the obama continuum. how can we expand the electorate. to tom's point, bringing in younger voters, bringing in more diverse electorate. that was our key to victory for obama. somehow that has gotten lost in the midterms. what you see with the candidates, i put them squarely in the obama continuum. the idea we're not going to try to win over all the republican voters, but expand the electoral and bring more of our voters into the process which is very different strategically. >> to that point, tom, your people invoke this a lot. it's easy to say we expand the electorate. it's hard to turn nonvoters into voters, infrequent voters into voters. are you cannibalizing election date vote or do you

you see gillum ahead. the democrats are ahead right now but i'm curious how hillary clinton did there in the election in 2016. >> let's take a look. that's the wonder. a little history here. go back in the magic. this was donald trump territory. this was donald trump territory. i remember -- if you remember, in -- during the day, in florida, democratic operatives down here were texting in during the day that they were nervous at what they saw, the turnout, the election turnout on election day, the clinton campaign liked their early vote, turned out they cannibalized their election vote. the trump forces overwhelmed the clinton campaign in this part of the state with election day turnout. this the presidential race, very competitive, but this is red in the presidential race, so now you come forward to 2018 and one of the things you're looking for is a trump effect. how many voters voted for trump now turned and say, go democrat for senator or governor this time. that's one thing we look at. that's the house

you have the exciting progressive in gillum. depending how those shake out, they'll win by different margins. it might be a grab bag, but that will tell us a lot about how to campaign and win in 2020. but we have no idea what formula is going to work. >> and what's interesting, nina, trump has said gillum is not qualified for the governorship. he's called him a thief. i know there are a lot of individuals in florida on the progressive left and african-americans who feel like president trump is using racial coded language, calling him a thief, et cetera. is it working in getting gillum's voters excited and enthusiastic about voting, or is it depressing the vote? >> i think in some ways it is exciting, but again, i was there on sunday. it's not just that. you know, the president has racialized this race. he racialized the race for andrew gillum. he racialized the race in georgia for stacey abrams. he brought race into this. to call an african-american man a thief, we all know exactly what he's intimating there. no secret. but peop

then you would see andrew gillum. there was an undervote across the state where people voted in the senate race and not the governor's race. a lot of that you have to put down with race-based voting, some people voting for scott who was white and not voting for gillum. in the red, that's the place where the undervote was in reverse. more people voted in the governor's race than the senate race. is there any explanation that you can think of, steve, for that? only in broward county that happenin happening. >> well, if you look at the ballot, on the left-hand side, the instructions went down to the ballot and then the race was there. the governor's race was to the top of the ballot, and some people think they missed the race. the one interesting thing about it is congressional races were directly below the senate races. it didn't have the same undervote. so there's a question of whether or not people just missed the race or if there's an issue with scanners. this is why we have a recount. every one of these ballots will

gillum has been much better about that.has been imbued with racial dog whistling that started with ron desantis, he said at some point don't elect andrew gillum, we don't want to monkey this up, and then you had the president calling gillum a thief. i think we're sort of sensitive to that in this race, but i think this particular instance of using the word cotton-picking, it didn't strike me as a racial dog whistle. >> gillum's response was different than when his opponent said monkeyed up. he went really hard back at desantis and called him out for the dog whistling, the foghorn that he says more than a dog whistle that it's so loud. here, two days out, i think it tells us everything. >> exactly. >> that he did not want to make this about race at the end because he is not just courting a base in florida, a very purple state. he is also courting -- he wants to make sure some white voters who may not be comfortable picking him to go ahead and pick him heading to the ballot box. that was a telling moment where that race is. >

his opponent democrat, andrew gillum packed a crowd earlier in orlando today. he got some presidential help of his own, as you know, former president obama campaigned for him friday. and recent polls show gillum and desantis, well, you see it, a difference of 1 percentage point, well within the margin of error. ally batali has been talking to early voters in the sunshine state. she's in lakeland, florida, the energy i'm guessing you're seeing is only increasing. >> reporter: yeah, certainly, when we were at a voting place this morning in polk county, there were many people going in and out. there was a few minute wait for folks to get to the ballot box. on a saturday morning, i think the people hoping for higher turnout, this is what you want

desantis is ahead of gillum now by fewer than 34,000 votes out of over 8 million cast. that makes the margin less than half a percentage point which in florida triggers an automatic machine recount of the votes. so that's ongoing across the state as we speak, though at last check, broward county still had not started its recount, and the deadline for counties to complete the recount is thursday afternoon. the same goes for the florida senate race. but that race is much closer. as you can see, nbc news still has this race too close to call. just 12,500 votes separate rick scott and bill nelson. scott's lead in this race has dwindled over the last week, and on thursday at noon, when the machine recount is over, if it's over by then, and if the margin is still this close or closer, there will be a hand recount of all the votes. i spoke with nbc news national political correspondent steve kornacki earlier today. he told me earlier the hand recount is where things may get really interesting. >> in the issue in broward county is you had this extraordinary number of what they
