gilroy police did put out an advisory yesterday.hey say the air quality is poor for people living here. the fire started saturday spreading from just five acres to 100 acres. the problem is the steep terrain, loose dirt on a hillside. no structures are threatened. they have been useing air support to keep the fire from spreading. >> it's not right to set off fireworks this time of year with 100-degree weather and dry everywhere. it puts people in danger. that's not right. >> reporter: this fire is one of dozens in the west coast. the mission fire in the sierra has mandatory evacuations in place for certain neighborhoods. right now, crews on that fire say they only have 5% containment with more than 800 acres burning. and here fire crews our last update they have 10% containment and it spread to about 100 acres. later on this morning at sun-up they will be able to get out here and check for hot spots. >> the firefighters are using all their resources nearby including a golf course? >> reporter: yeah. you know, it's pretty interesting

here in gilroy. record heat. a bank in downtown gilroy the temperature hit 111 this afternoon. the old record for this day was 102 back in 1976. the all time high in gilroy is 115 on july 15 1972. farmworkers, roofers, construction workers and others braved the heat but there were few people to be seen on the streets. in gilroy rob fladeboe kron 4 news chief meteorologist brittney shipp joins us now with another look at the four zone forecast... oppressive heat is forecast across the interior and higher elevations today through saturday as strong high pressure builds over the region. in addition, very warm temperatures will spread to the coast as onshore flow weakens. a region-wide cool down is forecast to begin on sunday, especially near the coast, but very warm to hot conditions will continue over inland areas through early next week. he joins us live in gilroy with an update...ew video of the wildfire that crews are currently fighting in gilroy. no structures have been destroyed but this video was shot last night by neighbors shortly after the flames broke out.this is all happening near the eagle ridge golf club in gilroy.that is where we find kron 4's j.r. stone. j.r., are crews making any progress? (j.r.)they certainly are. this fire is only 10 percent contained but it has not burned any structures and it is not nearly as close to homes tonight as it was last night. behind me you can see some of the firetrucks that are out here. these crews aren't going anywhere overnight.today was a busy one. helicopters and planes were used to drop both water and fire retardent on the flames and the areas that are smoldering near the eagle ridge golf club. i could see the smoke from this fire in san jose. 100 acres have burned. at one point today crews said it was at 130 but after some of the haze and smoke cleared they determined it to be a 100 acre fire. this video was

firefighters are battling flames growing in gilroy this hour. damian trujillo is live with the progress firefighters have been making. we know the cause of the fire now. >> reporter: it's unofficial at this point but witnesses do tell us that children may have been playing with fireworks in this location but, again, the fire department is not confirm that as of this point. this is all the latest and they're making that huge trek up the hill, rugged terrain up here in the santa teresa boulevard hills in gilroy. firefighters do not know the official cause. they are busy trying to get some sort of containment around the fire. ar up here in eagle rich. no evacuations at this point. rough terrain making the fire difficult to fight. crews have thousands of feet of water hose laid out uphill and downhill and here is another problem. this fire started at night so getting all the help from cal fire was not possible. >> we still have 100 firefighters out here. it's very difficult terrain. you can see it's very dark, very difficult terrain. very steep. ear

let's start with the gilroy commute and people driving north from gilroy into san jose, that does look okay. i spoke to one who drives from gilroy to san francisco which is about 80 miles. people do these long commute. traffic continues to move along pretty well here as you drive into the silicon valley. this is a picture of the skyline of san jose which looks pretty good. bay bridge, no major problems getting on to the bay bridge. nice looking commute driving into san francisco. we have not had much going on. hopefully it will stay a nice commute. now, what about that weather? >> yeah, what about that weather? it's been crazy, hasn't it? >> yes. >> to say the least. one hurricane after another. this is slamming the leeward island and heading right into puerto rico. category 5. no such thing as a category 6. category 5 with gusts over 200 miles per hour. we're going to be hearing a lot about this. now, the track. the track now favors. somebody asked, that's the forecast model and that is its track. this is their proposed or forecast track. you can see they almost all -- there is always

kron 4's j-r stone is live in gilroy tonight with the latest.. j.r? shooting into the air in gilroy near the eagle ridge community. this is viewer video shot on sunday night by a neighbor who was in her backyard when the fire started. sot heard two pops and saw some kids and the next thing the hill was on fire.mary porcari says it actually sounded like fireworks and she soon saw those kids running away. one even told her he didn't do it. within minutes of whatever the sounds were.this is what could be seen.sot initially it was pretty hairy because it advanced up the ridge line pretty fast.firefighters spent monday fighting the flames from both the air and the ground. helicopters and planes were used to dump water and fire retardent on the hot spots. the flames have moved farther from homes but there is still lots of smoke coming from the hundred acres that have burned. no structures have burned but one firefighter was injured when he fell. he should be okay and that's good news to those living here.sot fireman as they came we probably had 200 that cam

. >>> cell is right over there watching the gilroy commute and everything else.>> we do have the gilroy commute and it is going to be a tough one in some areas this morning. it is already getting slow. let's take a look at that gilroy commute . you can see the northbound 101 traffic is going to be doing pretty well as you drive from morgan hill up in from gilroy and into san jose. it is not a terrible commute in san jose just yet. traffic is moving relatively well and there has been no major issues as you drive. pulling back on the map you can see most of the commute around the bay is doing well except there is that one exception and we talked about this last time. westbound 580 at northland there was a motorcycle accident making 580 commute a lot slower than it normally is. at extra time. looks at the motorcyclist is up and walking around but there were injuries in that crash. this is a look at 280 in san jose looking fine up to 17. at the bay bridge usually at now is when the metering lines go on between 5:20 and 5:30. that is when slow traffic builds up there. >>> let's bring steve i
