let's bring in gina and dan greenhouse. both are cnbc contributors. gina, bull case or bear case? >> well, probably near term bull. but full year bear case. we're expecting s&p to end at about 1400 on the year. but that doesn't mean that markets can't expand all the way probably through june because there is a lot of positive sentiment and pent up demand that we are starting to see. we saw hiring today announced by ford. and we are expecting that to continue. however at some point we will start to see the expectations are far too high and markets expecting 2 percent plus growth. we have to be content with 1.7. market expectations for earnings at $112 are just too high in our opinion. we think that is probably somewhere 102, 104. and quite frankly, the risks are fatter than ever. and they, right now, are being suppressed. the mark set very, very bullish right now. >> okay. >> probably give back. >> so you will be a bull and then a bear around june of this year. what about you, dan? bull or bear? >> i don't see how you can be a bear in the second half of the year when a lot of the f

gina martin adams is an equity strategist at wells fargo securities. off a lot of things, unemployment. auto, housing, asia. you put those same things into a mix and you don't get as optimistic a view as he does. >> it's more likely the market takes a little bit of pous and a lot of that is because of policy and everything that's going on in washington, creating some degree of limited risk tolerance. but the other key component is earnings. the market has risen over the last several years on the backbone of strong earnings gains. a year ago we the backbone of very, very strong earnings gains. a year ago, we were talking about 16% earnings gains year over year. now we're talking about 0% to 3%. i think we're more likely to take a little bit of pause. the economy resets. the earnings resets in 2013 and then maybe we can move higher into the end of the year. >> let's take it a little further how these sectors performed in 2012. financials did the best. up more than 26%. but you can see consumer discretionary, which is the kind of thing that is affected by

gina martin adams covers the markets for wells fargo, joins me live from new york city. welcome back to "halftime." nice to see you. >> nice to see you too. >> you're a party pooper, why aren't you smiling? >> i'm still pretty bearish toward the market. >> what data are you looking at? we have the best eurozone pmis in months. the china train wreck ain't a train wreck. >> the data i'm looking at is earnings. unfortunately we lost a lot of our earnings push for the market. starting in the fall of 2012. and this entire rally has been based on valuation. investors seem to be willing to look through pretty extraordinary weakness in the earnings stream, the beat ratio on the s&p so far this season is well below average, consistent with the last two quarters of earnings. we're looking for the turn around in earnings that investors are so desperately starting the price into stocks and just not seeing it. >> we're looking at different data. what i see in terms of the beat ratio, talking about a beat ratio, not underperform ratio, is that you have, i think it is 70% to 80% of s&p
