i want to bring in our political analyst, gloria borger, gloria, i know the president made calls tonightth john boehner, and in the senate, mitch mcconnell, what are you hearing? is there any glimmer of hope that they can at least punt and delay? >> the leaders are not exactly over there trying to work this out, wolf. and according to the senior republican i spoke with just an hour ago, he said to me that john boehner told his troops, "we're not going to be left holding the hot potato here." so it is clear this is not going to be over, any time in an hour or so. what you're going to see happen in the house is they're going to pass this bill with their amendments. they believe they're on terra firma on this amendment, that says that house members can't have special privileges when it comes to health care, that they have to buy into the president's health care plan. they believe it is good for them back home, and they're going to shove it. so i don't think it will get resolved before midnight. >> i don't think so either, but david, really the bite may not take place until around 8 or 9 or

this is clearly a critical day, gloria borger still here. rlier that the republicans in the house, and that's the key issue right now, the house of representatives. senate, i think, are going to go along with what the house decides, senate republicans, and democratic majority in the senate. the house republicans, will they put something up for a vote? apparently they're going to put something up for a vote maybe as early as today to raise the debt ceiling but not meet immediatelm with the government shutdown. how will that play? >> it's not going to play well because the president wants to deal with the government shutdown. he said no negotiations on anything until you deal with the government shutdown. we don't know what strings might be attached. there's all kinds of reporting out there but we haven't seen an actual list of strings that might be at tamped. and the president has said he doesn't -- he doesn't want any. so this is far from being resolved, wolf. i do believe, as we were talking about before, the republicans are looking for some

and our political analyst gloria borger and dana bash. i know it's only 8:00 where you're from. so it's not that much of a hardship to be up this late. but thanks so much. but dana, get us up to speed on where the senate negotiations are. and congressman i want to see if it's anything you can live with. >> they are pretty much almost there. the question is whether senate republicans agree to it and the gist is that the government will be reopened and funded until the middle of january. the debt ceiling will be raised until probably the first week in february. and you know, the idea is that democrats gave a little bit, they think a lot because they wanted the debt ceiling to be raised through the end of 2014. it's going to be earlier. and the republicans think they gave a little bit. they wanted to have the government open and move all the way into next year because you know, the sequester levels, another round of cuts happen in 2014. but that's not going to happen now. >> they would keep the level of funding at the lower sequester now but not the lower level that kicks in next y

i want to the bring in also gloria borger, jim acosta at the white house and christine romans with me in new york. dana bash, this has happened, many feared that it might. and it actually has. what is the immediate reaction you're getting there? who is to blame? how long will it last? >> who's to blame? we're going to see what happens and whether or not the reality matches the polls beforehand and the fear among republicans, frankly, that they are the ones who will get the blame. that is the big reason why john bane area, the house speaker didn't want to go down this route in the first place. remember, he wanted to pass a bill that just funded the government and worry about the other things that they wanted to do dealing with the debt ceiling in the negotiations in the next three weeks. he was unable to do that. he didn't have the votes to do it within his republican caucus. that's why they set out the series of votes they have lost each time dealing with chipping away at obama care. when will this end? we simply don't know. over the weekend, a senior republican said to me of the cons

i'm gloria borger in for candy crowley. despite a failed effort to defund obama care that resulted in bringing much of the government to a standstill for 16 days, senator ted cruz isn't giving up the fight. and even though he isn't winning many friends here in washington, republicans in his home state are standing by their man. cruz received a hero's welcome saturday at a texas convention of republican women, and cnn's chief congressional correspondent dana bash was there and spoke with the freshman senator right after that event. dana, that was quite a hero's welcome, right? >> when i saw ted cruz walk into that room, i was looking for a rock star, not a senator. it was really unbelievable. 800 texas republican women and they greeted him really as a hero, not the senator his fellow republican senators in washington have disdain for. i asked him about some of the criticism from his own party, the likes of which i have rarely seen in washington, including from john mccain who called who senator ted cruz did a fool's errand,
