let's get more with chief political analyst gloria borger and ron brownstein and cnn political commentatord jeffrey toobin. gloria, these ad wars are escalating right now but in the bottom line, do they really mean much? >> i think at this point, first of all, i'm used to seeing biographical ads where these candidates would be introducing themselves to the public but it hasn't worked for jeb bush. this is what mitt romney was doing at this point. it hasn't been working. so they are not doing that. they are doing these ads that are negative and nasty to try and differenciate themselves. as i was looking at sarah's piece, what occurred to me is that they are all stepping on each other. they are all so nasty about each other that the public might just say, you know what, i can't tell the difference between these folks. and so i'm not quite sure about the effectiveness, although i do think that the cruz ad with the men in business suits climbing across the border was pretty good, i must saw. >> why is trump continuing to hit jeb bush as he's fallen in the polls? what's going on here? >> well,

to discuss all of this is political commentator michael smerconish and chief political analyst gloria borgerre were some real fiery moments at last night's debate, especially between trump and cruz. gloria, observers are saying this is the best debate performance from both donald trump and ted cruz. do you agree with that? >> i think it was the best debate performance for donald trump. i'm not so sure about ted cruz. ted cruz was taking incoming on the birth issue. i don't think he put that to rest. he got off a couple good lines making it clear that donald trump once thought his birth was not an issue and now that he's gone up to the polls donald trump suddenly thinks it's an issue r. i think cruz did not do well on the new york values answer. he got booed from the audience there and i think he turned trump into a sympathetic figure. here's ted cruz whose wife used to be employed by goldman sachs, which last time i checked was a new york base investment firm. so what are new york values in their family? >> it's interest. ing too because he actually clapped when trump came back after him. an

joining us gloria borger and former obama adviser dan pfeiffer and doug heye, former communications director at the rnc. four years ago you were working in a heated iowa and new hampshire race. hillary clinton just a month ago in new hampshire was leading bernie sanders in the monmouth poll. now she risks fouling behind in iowa as well. what's going on here? >> this was always going to be a close race in the first two states. the best thing hillary can do to do well in new hampshire is win iowa. i think their focus is in the right spot. historically the results in iowa affect the new hampshire polls. the challenge for sanders comes after new hampshire. can he demonstrate any ability to expand coalition and compete in states like south carolina, nevada and the rest of the country. until he can do that, he's very limited to those two first -- those two first states. >> doug, let's say, so they're neck and neck right now in iowa. he's ahead. he has these big new numbers come out in new hampshire. let's say bernie sanders eqes out a win in iowa and then wins in new hampshire. if he has that mome

or senior white house correspondent, jim acosta, chief white house correspondent jake tapper, gloria borgerking. jake, this is an important moment for the president. it's his final year in office. he's trying to do now what he has so far failed to do over the first seven years. >> that's right. now, three years ago, after the sandy hook shootings, he also did -- took some executive actions. 23, in fact. but they were minor. there is a lot of build-up about what he is doing this week. when you look at the actual proposals, at least so far as we understand them, they are relatively minor despite the fact that gun control advocates are saying this is a big, historic moment and that gun rights activists are saying this is a horrible thing that's going to lead to the confiscation of guns. these are relatively minor steps, as far as we've been told so far. it gets a conversation going about an issue the president has felt very frustrated about dealing with congress. he wasn't able when there was a democratically controlled senate, he wasn't able to get some bigger measures in terms of closing the

. >> so, let's talk about all this, i want to bring in gloria borger if anyone can analyze this, you is feeling really good. he has sarah palin out there and doing well in the polls. the cnn poll that we had out today. iowa, he may have a shot now. what do you make of what he said? >> i think he has a good shot to win iowa, a good shot to win new hampshire. and you saw the way -- you didn't have to prompt him that much to take on ted cruz. >> he really went in on ted cruz. i was surprised that so much. so is this -- you know, the strategy, it seems -- they have had this, what we call a bromance, from the beginning. was it right for ted cruz? was it the right strategy not to hit back at donald trump for so long. >> the people who historically hit donald trump fall, themselves. lindsey graham and rick perry, jeb bush, it doesn't seem to do them any good. cruz understood from very early on that if trump were to fall that he would want to get some of his supporters. and so he didn't attack him hard at all. in fact, he liked him and it was a bromance. but once they became one and two, the

he also said something to our gloria borger within the last 15, 20 minutes. he said that they want to make this about megyn kelly. it's not about megyn kelly. it's about fox news. i want you to jump in here as well because all i have heard from donald trump's camp is it's all about megyn kelly. there's an instagram post saying megyn kelly is really biassed against me. do you think she can be fair at the debate? these snarky comments from fox news that many are saying are beneath them, is this providing political cover for donned trump to pull out of the debate and blame fox news and no longer blame megyn kelly? >> that is the view from fox right now. what executives there believe is that trump was looking for a way out of this debate for weeks and he is using megyn kelly as an excuse. now we're using the statement as an excuse. fox believed it was trying to set trump straight, use humor to diffuse the situation. instead a bomb blew up in his face. you could argue that they failed to stand up to trump. whether trump is there oornt, megyn will be there. this is

also gloria borger here with me in washington.ou had this one-on-one interview with ted cruz. how is he respond iing on what should do? >> reporter: well, he was trying to laugh it it up making pop culture reference saying it was a non-issue. but the bottom line is that it's been three days now and donald trump isn't letting it go so i asked him about the legal basis for why hes he thinks he's okay. >> you're a constitutional scholar. you have argued before the supreme court. why do you think on the legal basis he's wrong? >> the legal issue is is straight forward. the son of a u.s. citizen born abroad is a natural born citizen. >> but it's never. been tested. you have done it on other issues. >> the constitution and laws of the united states are straight forward. the very first congress defined the child of a u.s. citizen born abroad as a natural born citizen. many of the members of the first congress were framers at the constitutional convention. at the end of the day, this is a nonissue. >> so he's say iing it's a a nonissue be
