i'm gloria rodriguez. we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather.ave meteorologist lisa argen tracking the rain today. and lisa, i know you have been really looking at all of the radar and everything. how is it looking right now? well, we have a little bit of a break out there. we had a wave move through earlier and overnight out picking up anywhere from a couple of hundredths to maybe a quarter of an inch for parts of the east bay. there's a look, a live doppler seven. most of the activities in the pacific northwest, we go in closer, our sweep on top of mount saint helena shows a few scattered light showers. penngrove napa. look at salon. the peninsula. not much at all. down through saratoga highway 17 an so you can see the loop since the overnight hours and this little wave has since moved on through and with it bringing some fog and the mild temperatures with the south winds, there's a look at the reduced visibility a quarter of a mile in novato over two miles in san carlos and look how dark that looks. 53. san francisco and san jose 55 half moon

abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez in the newsroom with what the u.s. ortation secretary is saying this morning, gloria. >> yeah. good morning. kumasi us transportation secretary pete buttigieg saying with a failure this large, there has to be consequences. he says this sends a message with a new standard and level of accountable. this all goes back to the holidays last year, when southwest canceled 16,900 flights after an operational meltdown, stranding more than 2 million passengers. the department of transportation found southwest didn't provide adequate customer service assistance, flight status notifications, or prompt refunds. the airlines has since paid out more than $600 million in refunds and reimbursements, and now they'll have to pay $140 million in fines and make changes to the way they compensate passenger fares. >> what we're doing here is sending a message to the entire airline industry. you need to take care of your passengers, and if you don't, there will be consequence as and southwest saying in a statement, we are pleased that we reach

i'm gloria rodriguez and first of all, let's get a check of the weather.s meteorologist lisa argen and lisa, we've been talking about it all morning. it is chilly out there today. >> yeah, we went out there and we were surprised. i was surprised. it's really cold out there. temperatures have certainly begun to recover in parts of the bay area. but starting with live doppler seven to show you where the rain is, the storm track and jet stream just doesn't want to budge out of the pacific northwest. so we are left with cold, dry air. 47 san francisco not too bad, 40in oakland. that's cold with low to mid 40s from san mateo, san jose and hayward. half moon bay, 50 degrees. what a gorgeous view here. and you can see the north bay number still freezing. our freeze warning for another couple of hours. but already turning a corner. we were 28 in petaluma, so 30 sure, that's cold. 32 freezing, 35. fairfield, 37in concord. so some of you are colder. but look at hayward and livermore, 3 to 7 degrees, milder and we will be looking at the temperatures coming up through

i'm gloria rodriguez and meteorologist lisa argen has been tracking the wet weather as we head into the new year. so that's the big question is it going to be dry tomorrow for the fireworks? >> we are looking at progressively drier weather. in fact, even today our level one system lasting throughout the morning hours, you can see the line of showers really focused from the san mateo coast, the peninsula. they're over into the east bay. so marin and sonoma, still some isolated showers, but the heavier rain. check it out. south of whipple road, moving into union city 8-80 paseo padre parkway and newark. getting the wet weather and westward onto the peninsula. there uh. it has been wet in san francisco, burlingame now, and down towards woodside, los altos hills. the scattered showers and up in the north bay a little bit quieter. some peeks of sun. we are looking at our level one system with scattered showers, thus high surf warning and the coastal flood warning through 2:00 and this will all be winding down later on today, but very dangerous out there with over 14ft right off point rays ri

i'm gloria rodriguez. and why don't we get started with a check of your weather? here's meteorologist lisa argen good morning, lisa. hey, gloria. >> good morning to you. it is freezing cold in the north bay. temperatures dropping down into the low 30s. we have a freeze warning until 10:00 for the valleys of the north bay and kurt satellite picture shows all the rain to the north. so we'll talk about the cold, cold temperatures. 34 napa, santa rosa with 38 in livermore, 33. san ramon 36. palo alto, it is 46in san francisco. and our 24 hour temperature change 3 to 4 degrees colder for you in concord in oakland and novato and the temperatures will continue to drop for the next several hours. so from marin, sonoma and napa, the coldest spots here just like yesterday day and as we go through the morning hours, we're still in the upper 30s inland by 9:00. elsewhere around the bay in the 40s, even at the 50 at the coast. so wide ranging temperatures, sunshine warming us through the 50s by noontime time. upper 50s a lot like yesterday for the afternoon today, but we'll tal

here's abc seven's gloria rodriguez. >> i didn't even realize i had these. >> joan levin is getting readyve out of this oceanfront historic home in pacifica, because of a threat that creeps closer every day. coastal erosion for over 45 years. >> i was able to maintain it. we had ravine uh- erosion on, and now we have the bluff erosion. >> and levin isn't alone. this is just one of many homes in northern california that's just feet from the beach with amazing ocean views. but it's prime land that's disappearing. a recent study by the u.s. geological survey projects up to 75% of california's beaches could become completely eroded by the end of the century. well just see a lot fewer wider beaches, and we'll see a lot more narrow beaches where the water is right up against the cliff areas where once we had large beaches, they're now almost gone. this was a dry dream home for levin and her then husband, who bought the property in 1977. well i think the spaces are so open and then you get the magnificent view of the ocean. levin has these photographs showing the previous life of the property wh

i'm gloria rodriguez. killed in the line of duty. 36 year old tom lee was shot while he and other officers were responding to a burglary at a cannabis business at embarcadero and fifth yesterday. we are waiting for an update on any possible arrests. officer lee had worked for the department for four years for the past two years, he was a community resource officer and so many people tell us that lee was committed to keeping oakland safe and that losing him is heartbreaking. the chp is investigating a wreck in pacheco. it happened in heavy rain last night, trapping the driver. witnesses say that he hit several parked cars near bloom drive. the truck continued about 400 yards before striking a power pole and then overturn thing. the driver suffered moderate injuries. no word yet on what led to that crash, but officials say that weather is likely to be a factor. and speaking of weather, let's get a check of your forecast for today with lisa argen. good morning lisa. hey gloria, our level one system with us th

i'm gloria rodriguez and lisa argen is here this morning. lisa it was raining a lot yesterday. today. is it going to be raining again today? yeah. well you know we've downgraded the system. >> we're behind it now. it's a level one. so we are waking up to scattered showers. pretty widespread. you can see all across the bay area, but we are definitely behind the system. and so looking at still some heavier downpours in spots as we take you right now down to daly city and you can see some returns there from 82 brisbane, south san francisco and also across the bay and into mill valley, marin county, 580 over into richmond and some wet weather. lagunitas on the coast. and you can see also. highway one from pacifica to pescadero. some showers working their way into the san mateo coast, and finally from saint helena, santa rosa scattered showers. so we will certainly be looking at this level one system throughout the morning hours. after about 9:00, things really do wind down, but we're still left with the rough surf. the chance of a thunderstorm form. and here's some fog from livermo

i'm gloria rodriguez. meteorologist lisa argen is here tracking a light level one storm this morning. and lisa, i know the roads were wet this morning when i drove into work. yeah. >> and i had to use the wipers. so certainly, depending on where you were, this system is on the move. and as we look at live doppler seven, right now, you can see all the cloud cover and some of the green as we go in closer, you'll notice that it is widely scattered from san francisco over into the east bay, very light return as most of you not seen anything at all. and the northern extent of it off the coast there near davenport port. so this is a light level one system with intermittent scattered showers throughout the day, bringing the slippery roads and some low visibility. at times. the winds out of the south keeping it mild , low 50s here looking at 53 in hayward and san jose and that's significantly warmer than we were yesterday, about ten degrees warmer at this time. so a live look outside a dark exploratorium camera. s
