abc's scott goldberg on the penn state campus.and sunny. penn state very much unsettled university. there is a much larger police presence on the streets and it is going to stay that way through saturday when the lions host their final home football game of the year. all this as the university and the community gets used to the idea that for the first time in decades, joe paterno is not the head football coach. penn state head football coach tom bradley is the way it sounds now. it doesn't sound quite right, not even to him. he says it's with mixed emotions and heavy hearts that he is going to go through this. campus board of trustees fired joe paterno, as well as the university president, graham spanier. and immediately afterwards police said 4,000 to 5,000 students poured on to the streets causing chaos, turning over a television truck. the students said their 84-year-old coach, paterno, deserved to coach at least one more game. >> joe-pa should not take the fall for this. >> reporter: paterno called it one of the great sorrows

first my conversation with the atlantic's jeffrey goldberg. in terms of its nuclear arsenal, how much confidence should the u.s. have that pakistan, that the arsenal is secure? >> the u.s. should have confidence that the people around the nuclear arsenal are among the best pakistan has to offer. they have a very professional service guarding the nukes. the problem is twofold. one, pakistan itself is not a stable place. and what the deep american worry is, is that the state, itself, will disintegrate. a second worry is that we have seen repeatedly that the pakistani military, pakistani intelligence services, are penetrated by people who are sympathetic or outright members of organizations like the taliban and so when you're for instance moving nuclear weapons from one place to another which is how the pakistanis hide them from among others the americans, when you're moving those, if you have someone inside who is going to tell you, you know, at so and so hour and so and so road there is a truck with fissile material that can be used for say a d

colonel anthony shafer from the center for advanced studies, and atlantic correspondent, jeffrey goldberg, who was co-author of "the ally from hell," a cover story on pakistan that ran in both the "atlantic" movie and the "national journal." tony, how big a deal is this? >> this is big by the fact this is a continuation of the same issues we've been dealing with for the past sen years. i don't believe for a minute that nato fired without provocation on this area. the bottom line is this. we are both daddy warbucks, we pay these bills for these, $2 billion a year to the pakistani army. at the same time, we're the bogeyman. what you're seeing here, dylan, is that effect. you're seeing the manipulation of the facts, by both sides, frankly. but the bottom line is this is simply one more battle in the long-running issues between the paks and us. and frankly the bottom line is the pakistanis still aren't being helpful and that's what this is really all about. >> how much of a disruption, jeffrey, would this be to our ability to even to continue to prosecute war in afghanistan if pakistan decide
