kpix 5 reporter juliette goodrich shows us what they are doing now to get rid of it. >> reporter: well, it's in motion right now. you know, drive over the new eastern span of the bay bridge and you can see the old portion of the bay bridge. they are dismantling the truss piece by piece. and because the weather is on our side, they are ahead of schedule. out here you take down a bridge. it entails lowering the first 500-foot truss. we are talking 2500 tons of steel, patience and precision key. >> this focuses in on the leveling the actual centering of the super steel truss that's very obvious to the public and we are separating it from its foundation. >> reporter: here's what they are doing. this is a set-up version. the truss is actually lowered 25 feet an hour in real time. the weight and feel of each truss to be lowered is equivalent to 2500 tons. it is a slow and methodical operation. the lowering dismantling process is complex but also environmentally friendly. >> when the trusses were erected in 1935, there were hundreds of timber piles that were used in the erection of the truss.
