first from the gop what are you expecting out of the debate? >> i think you'll see donald trump continue to be donald trump for better or for worse. i think you will see -- i hope you will see more focus on the problems of the country, the failures of the obama administration, which is what this election ought to be about, and what we're going to do to change that. more on public policy, how we would actually do what the american people know needs to be done. i think that's what this debate ought to be about. it ought to be about what's wrong with the country, how we would go about fixing it, and why that would work. >> so which gop candidate do you think offers the best economic plan? last week jeb bush came out with an op ed on tax reform, and the headline of that op ed was my tax plan to ensure 4% growth. is that doable? who has the best plan in your vision? >> well, of course it is doable, as i said. after the last big recession, we saw the economy grow at 4.8% over a six-year period so that is very doable. i don't think we've seen enough f

of course, all of this is happening because trump is relatively new to the gop. he is doing extremely well. he has the highest poll ratings nationally. republicans have been worried if he doesn't get the nomination, he could take the supporters he has and bolt the gop and run as independent and hand the white house to the democrats. the republicans have been quietly trying to talk to trump and try to convince him to cajole him to get him to make this promise to stay in the gop. different response from last month in the debate where he would not make that pledge. i asked what changed and what makes him sign it now when he would not do it a few weeks ago. listen. >> what changed over the past several weeks? >> well, i think the big thing, dana, that's changed and it has been obvious to all, number one, after i announced, we went up like a rocket ship. the thing that changed is i went to the number one place quickly after i signed. i went early to number one and the rnc has treated me with great respect. >> reporter: to be clear, this is not legally binding at all.

they are the two top candidates in the gop field.ng i'll be looking for is to see if donald trump puts some meat on the bones of the policies he's been talking about. you heard him there just say the answer to reforming campaign finance, for example, is to put good people in positions of power. that's not really a policy position. so i think voters are going to want to hear some more specifics from donald trump. we are entering into the fall campaign season. and so some of this heated rhetoric isn't going to quite cut it. as we get closer and closer to some of these early voting states. the other thing that i'll be looking very closely for, alex, is to see jeb bush more aggressively goes after donald trump. he's ramped up his rhetoric against donald trump in recent weeks, and pushing back harder. will we see that on the debate stage? and then more broadly, if you look at some of the polls, the one you just cited, for example, it is clear voters have a real appetite for washington outsiders right now. the question is, can some of the

it seems like right now, that's not what gop voters are looking for. and bluster. >> joy, your new book, a great one, "fracture: barack obama, the clintons and the racial divide." you talk about race and politics. if you look at the other side of the aisle, the republicans at the moment. we have ben carson who we've been talking about, an african-american candidate, the only one on that side. apply what you wrote about in your book to what is happening with the republicans? >> the republican party has sort of an interesting position right here, given that ben carson, as you said, is becoming so popular. there isn't a large african-american voting base on the republican side. so it's not as if the kind of competition for that base that you saw between hillary clinton and barack obama in '08 is going to take place on the right. but you do have, i think, a well spring of support for ben carson, in part because he presents a contrast for conservatives with barack obama, quite frankly. and sort of an alternate universe obama in a lot of ways. and i've seen
