a gop in the congress that had a j.c. watts in its leadership and a gop that had a michael steele as its chair. that party would seem to be maybe making small steps is a very different scene today. michael steele, a j.c. watts, a colin powell, a condee rice, they were in the republican movement in 2000s. this is a directional shift when you have a corey stewart, a patrick little as candidates nominated or candidates running under the gop banner. so i think the difficulty for the gop is not only in its leadership optics and in the president's rhetoric, but also the fact that there are no longer any credible african americans in any leadership role anywhere, it seems, in the congress or in the executive branch. it's hard to make up a particularly when you've got a changing landscape in the country not to even mention the lack of latino leaders in the very same party. so you've got to look at this in terms of where it's come from maybe 15 years ago to where it is directionally in the wrong direction if you consider the demog

is he the gop's best messenger at this point? >> well, he's the one that they have.least to the base he absolutely is, particularly when he is in a state that he won. i was with him in pennsylvania on thursday night. he starts the first -- i would say 15 or 10 minutes of the rally reprizing minute by minute in some cases election night 2016. loves to talk about that. there's not as much messaging as some republican eliters would like him to talk about, rarely talks about the tax cut. he talks a lot about immigration and other matters. for the people in the room he's the best messenger but those voters are already with him. the question is what else does he bring when he comes to town? a lot of baggage. we talk a lot about the suburban women voters and other suburban voters, does he hurt more than he helps? we'll see. during a midterm election campaign, most people are not as focused on it as a presidential campaign. so he definitely draws attention to the race here and he fires up the base more than anyone can but he also is probably firing up the other side, firing

the bottom line is the gop in that area would be able to select someone to replace him. we already have heard from an executive at erie county, the comptroller who says he wants to run for the seat. new york 27 has been a reliably republican district for the last several cycles. so it appears that they would be able to save this district if it remains reliably read. we also know that the democrat running is trying to make hay out of this. he has been raising money in the days since representative collins indictment. we've also now heard from nancy pelosi, the democratic minority leader, and she said this insufficient and overdue announcement does little to drain the toxic cesspool of self-enrichment and corruption that has proliferated in washington under gop control. it looks as though even if they're able to replace collins on the ballot with a strong gop contend, the democrats are going to try to paint republicans as ethically challenged, in this case, legally challenged, sort of paint the party with a broad picture and say it's time to get democrats in. >> reliably r

>> the big question we're asking, is another gop election loss enough for the gop to change its strategy? joining me, msnbc capitol hill correspondent dare ron hak in columbus ohio and rick sherman. good to see you out of the capitol, number one. you've been talking to folks for the past day. what sort of things have you been hearing beyond what we just played a moment ago? >> yeah, katy, that was a good sample of the flavor we've gotten from here in ohio. two things have stuck out. trump is activating very much on both sides. a lot of democrats i talked to knew they were going to come out and vote in this race before they knew who the candidates were. they wanted somebody who was going to be a check on donald trump, likewise, having trump come out here saturday reminded some of that republican base that this is an election they should care about. troy balderson had not been a candidate who had gotten people here fired up. he needed that to get people back into his corner. and i think that's one of the key things here. the second is o'connor himself is not a flashy guy. he's not a unicor
