chairman gowdy. ranking member cummings. it's an honor to testify today for this hearing. as you know, i'm the dean of the miliken institute scoofl public health at the george washington university and we conducted a recent study about the excess mortality in puerto rico from hurricane maria. i submit for the record my full testimony, as well as the summary of my report. using sophisticated models that account for migration, annual and seasonal deaths rates and adjustments for demographics like, we found that there were 2,975 excess lives lost due to hurricane maria for the six-month study period of september, 2017, through february, 2018. all regions in puerto rico were affected but those living in municipalities with the lowest socioeconomic development, older adults especially males, experienced the greatest risk of excess mortality. the two highest risk groups continued to have excess mortality through february, 2018. like all the u.s., the physicians in puerto rico do not have the correct items
