this is my fourth or fifth year working on the new graduation requirements and a change of the graduation requirements. to say the least, i have invested a lot of time in this. over that number of years, i have been able to develop a relationship with young ladies i need to say thank-you to. that is a woman from coleman advocates. we have been friends and enemies, i think, at times. i want to say thank you. we have cochaired the new graduation retirements task force, and been involved in this work since days of community meetings. i just want to say thank you. supervisor campos: before we move on, a commissioner wanted to ask a question. commissioner maufas: i just wanted to make a quick comment, through the chair, and really to the other supervisors here, that this issue is probably has, from my perspective, and even going forward, from the past, going forward -- one of the largest issues around equity and access, if we ever even imagined we wanted a student to graduate and move forward in the world. in the world, no matter what they choose to do. this is the ground where they must reall

all of our graduates.the community schools forum, it was really wonderful to see so many people engaged in that. we also hosted -- we ran at a next generation luncheon, it was to celebrate and make a call to a new education champions. we are looking for the next generation of philanthropists that will step up. it was a good way to share what we were doing. last friday, the commissioner and i got to attend the filipino honorable and on a quite a few of our students. -- and honor quite a few of our filipino students. we were able to give scholarships to 20 of them. it was wonderful. they were $500 scholarships and $250 scholarships. i attend in the state commencement which was the last one for the doctor. i want to do a thanks to doctor corrigan for his 24 years of service to san francisco. he is an amazingly there. they have brought on a new president of the school. doctor wong. he is coming from michigan. there he is. our very own, he was honored at the board of supervisors for his tremendous work of the r

i dreamed first about graduating from college. up to that point, none of my family in new york had done that. then i grew bold and dreamed about becoming a lawyer and perhaps some day a judge. but the only kind of judge i knew was a child judge on "perry mason." i did not know what the supreme court was, and you can't aspire to do things you don't know about. so how did i become a supreme court justice? how did steve jobs who grew up in an era when there were no pcs create apple? one of the most innovative companies in history. steve jobs, who recently passed away was a college dropout who was fired from apple during his first tenure there. in a commencement speech at stanford university in 2005, he talked about three ingredients to his success. first, trusting his gut. second, liking what he chose to do. and three, living each day as if it were his last. his advice and the advice i offer you is not a map for your future, but an attitude about your future. that attitude will let you find satisfaction in the choices you make, and a

in only 30% of newcomer students actually graduated within four years under the former graduation requirement that are in place now for classes of 2013, 2012, etc. the other thing is that of the approximate 800 ninth through 12th grade students that we had come into the direct last year, 300 of those were actually in the ninth grade. so it is significant that 300 of that number were actually in the ninth grade when they entered our schools. so i've given you a really an outline of the problem where we saw the problem. now let me give you an outline of some of the inputs that we did with the city funding that we received for last summer. over 1,000 ninth graders took 1,724 courses last summer with the funding from the city. approximately 25% of all ninth graders in the district took part in a credit-earning summer program last summer. 42% of courses taken, so 42% of that total 1,724, were taken by african american, latino, and samoan students. approximately 962 courses were in the city-funded ninth grade courses of algebra, biology, english, and e.l.d. courses. so remember those were the four
