our staff recently visited many sites exploring greensboro's history. learn more about greensboro all weekend here on american history tv. >> going through and down the street, some of them had eggs going through them -- eggs thrown at them and water dumped on their heads from building. it never got to the point where -- isn't this nice? it was never nice. it was just more than the city could handle in the final amount. it was about unanimity and solidarity and we are all in this together. i grew up in ohio. ohio was a little less segregated. not less racist, but less segregated. so while i grew up in ohio and i understood that things were different in the south, i also grew up in a family that was very sophisticated about politics and what the situation was. i knew both sides of the coin and how i felt about it was that of course it was unjust and it needed to be changed. my father was very much involved in african-american rights as a social worker. he worked for the national urban league. i was not unaware of any of this and what this meant to black

the fight had just started in greensboro. okay, what are we going to do about these other restaurants in the movies than what are we going to do? so they tried to keep alive as jesse jackson said keep hope alive, by having meetings and you know energizing people. .. and then it picked up again. and here again i can't tell you why. you know there are mysterious things that happened in history. and people began to say okay, and the national congressional some national people were sent down to help and began to have organized sit-ins at the hotshots. it was a restaurant called the hotshots. and that the mayfair cafeteria and at the movies. and the more they did the more people joined. and so i 1962 you've got this continuing pressure on the city, marches and so on which are growing. and finally this culminates in the police department beginning to arrest people for trespassing. and that's when you have 250 bennett women who get arrested in 1963. kind of huge push for integration. meantime in washington you've got president lyndo

this weekend we have partnered with time warner cable for a visit to greensboro, north carolina. >> afteronths of cleaning the house of charles halpern, who had been given that task went on one more walk-through. in the attic he saw an envelope with a gray seal on it and walked over. it was in 1832 document. he removed a single mail from a panel in an upstairs attic room and discovered a trunk and books and poetry stuffed under the eaves. this was this treasure of dolly madison's things. we have had this store available to the public, different items from time to time, but try to include her life story from her birth in guilford county to her death in 1849. some of the items we currently have on display are carved ivory calling card case that has a karting closed with dolly's signature, as well as that of her name, anna, a perfume bottle, and a pair of silk slippers that have tiny ribbons the tie across the arch of her foot. the two dresses are the reproduction of a silk peach down that she wore and a red velvet gown, and there is also a legend that now accompanies this dress. >> want all
