i have one question that might be a bit off base. 1921 in greenwood there is the distraction of black wall street outside of tulsa. what was going on in oklahoma during this time? >> the question was about another very unknown or underreported story of the tulsa race riots that he's referring to.d they t they took place in 1921. some of the worst race rights in this country. the ku klux klan had a large presence in oklahoma and other states as well. the frontier had a lawless quality. when you read the documents the it wasn't unique to oklahoma. get a sense of how widespread the prejudice was. there is very fragile legal institutions at the time. i don't want to politicize the book but one of the things i realize is the country wass thar incredibly loveless. our legal institutions were fragile, we spent decades trying to build them up and create them. if there is a central thing i took away from the book it was how important it is that we are country of laws. it is an impartial judicial system and the powerful has to -- with justice. whether it was the race riots are the osage murders
