it happened at the borderline bar & grill in thousand oaks, 40 mills southwest of los angeles. katie eutis has the latest development >> reporter: there are 13 total dead, including the deputy. there is a reunification station. this was college night at that club. we have a hotline for p looking to check on loved ones. i will share that number in a moment. first, we have a photo of the ventura county sheriff's sergeant. this is sergeant ron helus, a 29-year veteran of the department. he is survived by a wife and son and was planning to retire just next year. the sheriff says helus and the chp officer entered the borderline bar & grill in thousand oaks 11:20 wednesday night. they arrived within minutes of the gunman opening fire. they exchanged shots. sergeant helus was hit. the chp officer pulled him out, but he died at the hospital. the gunman is also among the 13 dead. it is unclear if he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or the deputy's fire. they have not released his name. witnesses say they saw the shooter throw a smokeombeforeene crowd of people. hundreds inside.
