now it's about 500 miles to gulf port, mississippi. we think by monday evening overnight maybe going into tuesday morning this is when it is expected to make land fall. people crowding all along the beautiful beaches that are so fragile. here we go with this little hybrid system. subtropical storm alberto. the bulk of that moisture. the western edge, that's where we are picking up that dry air kind of eroding that western edge. water temperatures will continue to the development of the system. if you're expecting it will make it to hurricane strength it's not going to p happen. water temperatures are about 30 degrees plus or about 86 degrees fahrenheit. it sounds like good water to jump into. it looks like they will see a very strong rip current here and the rainfall is going to be the big problem with this. >> all right. i guess we have to get ready far little rain. >> okay. >>> with the gulf coast preparing for alberto it could be shut down. it doesn't go well for u.s. drivers who have seen a big jurp in gas prices. we have more now

alberto, the first named storm of the year, is slowly moving toward the gulf coast. the governors of florida and mississippi have already declared a state of emergency. the storm is just north of cuba and not expected to make landfall until sometime monday. but the outer bands are already starting to lash parts of southern florida. craig setzer with our miami affiliate wfor is following the storm. craig? >> reporter: the storm is getting a bit stronger tonight as it moves to the north, and during the day on sunday it has the possibility of even further intensification reaching the north gulf coast here some time late on monday or monday night, but it's a big, lop-sided storm with a lot of the bad weather east of the track and north of the track. so the effects will be felt well before the center makes landfall. wind is going to be a problem. tropical storm-force winds will be skirting the west coast of florida all the way up into the panhandle and much of the northern gulf coast. some of that wind will be going inland. and the other big issue with this storm besides

in some areas of the gulf coast.ns and destin, florida. >> fred, i want to break down the track a little bit more. you just showed it and i want to show it again because i want to emphasize as it moves off the western tip of cuba where it is now and heads towards the gulf of mexico, it will likely strengthen and likely make some signed of a landfall somewhere on the florida panhandle, perhaps over by mobile, alabama. one of the reasons why we anticipate it will strengthen is because of where it's moving. it's moving in the gulf of mexico. obviously the temperatures there anywhere from the mid-80s to the upper 80s. the closer you get to the coast, well, that's where the strengthening will occur. how much strengthening will occur? we're not 100% sure yet, we have to keep tracking this storm. the winds aloft are favorable to help it continue to intensify. max winds of 40 miles an hour just off the western tip of cuba. but we're also anticipating new information about it. why? because the hurricane hunter plane has just
