for the eastern gulf coast the first major storm of the season is on the way, and his name is gordon.the time the storm makes land fall, most likely along the mississippi coast line, it's expected to be a category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of up to 75 miles an hour. already the storm rained all over their holiday weekend in south florida. on labor day more than 4 inches of rain. all that water and the more than 50-mile-an-hour winds kept miami's gorgeous beaches empty. authorities posted rip current warnings along the beach and as always, there were risky souls ignoring them. police were urging drivers to stay off flooded roads. >> the roads are flooded. you have to drive super slow. >> you don't take any of these lightly. even though it may not be a hurricane. >> reporter: now mississippi and louisiana are declaring emergencies ahead of the storm. >> i'm encouraging everyone to be prudent, to be cautious. >> reporter: families trying to decide this morning what to do. get water or take their chances. last year mississippi was dealing with hurricane nate that brought 85

how is the gulf coast preparing? let's get to cnn's jennifer gray, she is life in gulf port, mississippi, with more where the storm surge -- i know you're keeping an eye on it. what are you seeing, jennifer? >> reporter: yeah, alisyn. the storm surge is the biggest concern for people here in gulf port and all along the mississippi/alabama coasts. we are here at the gulf port marina where all of the boats have been asked to get out of the water by 2:00 p.m. this morning. in fact, just in the past 30 seconds or so we saw some people walking by. everyone here trying to get their boats out while they can. if they don't, of course, there will be a penalty for them. so 2 to 4 feet storm surge, 3 to 5. that's enough for these boats to go over the dock and start banging together. that's why they want the boats out of the water. 4 to 8 inches of rain expected here. this is a very low lying area. any amount of storm surge will definitely have an impact, especially with some of the major roads along these towns running right alo

forecasters say the storm should get stronger as it moves along the gulf coast. gordon just formed today over the upper keys. but by midafternoon, areas like west palm beach were already being drenched. some parts of the state reportedly got up to 8 inches of rain in just a few hours. >> we saw the gust of wind and the rain falling and we're like, okay, this is not what we expected. >> the storm is on a path to hit states like mississippi and louisiana next and should strengthen to potential hurricane force. a 5-foot storm surge is expected, prompting workers at gulf coast marinas to spend their labor day tying up boats and securing docks. if gordon stays on its current track, the entire gulf coast will be dealing with significant rainfall. >>> as i mentioned earlier, in the 10:00 newscast, gordon has got the potential to hurricane now. some of the the next 24 hours which would be pretty amazing in such quick development and so close to land and looks like it wants to move up into the gulf states, louisiana. that's the story we'll be tracking. hurricanes as well

so when harvey was bearing down on the gulf coast a lot of that those refineries basically shut down now oil production itself and gas production that took a slight went down slightly but actually it was the refineries that took longer to get back on line so that's when you saw the gasoline prices start to surge and of course of the colonial pipeline that comes from houston to new york that was also shut down for a little bit due to power outages so that impacted some prices as well and a lot of it just a guessing game to see where these storms are going to be and people are reserved and concerned and it's the fear as much as before the storm even hits that causes some of these prices to change well you know there's not that sort of energy infrastructure in florence's path but what might be some of the large impact is i remember years ago from hurricane floyd back in ninety nine that hard for me had a big impact what's going to happen do you think. you know what a nightmare for those folks i mean that was a category two storm back in one thousand nine hundred nine they're looking at
