i want to go to gulfport in pinellas county. that is where cnn's carlos suarez is right now in carlos. you been getting the band's and seeing the water already moved up like where you're standing right now? >> that's exactly right. john. good morning. so in the last hour, emergency officials here in pinellas county have expressed a great deal of concern with the fact that the folks that live in this evacuation zone have decided stay put and their concern, as you can see around me, is some of the flooding that we're already seeing associated with this storm. what you're taking a look at here is the result of high tide and some of it the rain that we saw moved through the area overnight. and this morning. and so what's happening here is all of this water is accumulating just inland. and we're also keeping a close eye on the bay, which is to the right of me here because that water continues to creep over inland. there is a beach volleyball area that's set up there that is underwater. and so the concern as we go into the into the da

jim all right. >> carlos suarez in gulfport, florida. thank you so much, carlos. let's go to cnn's john berman and tallahassee. john, you covered a lot of these storms. it's getting messy already yeah. >> we're seeing the outer bands right now. it's been raining for the last couple hours or so when it's only going to get worse. remarkable pictures from carlos suarez in gulfport where they're seeing six feet of storm surge about 20 miles south of me, right along the big bend area of florida. they could get up to 20 feet of storm surge and the weather service calls that simply unsurvivable. the situation here in tallahassee is a little different, but also very, very dangerous. this city with a population of 200,000 storms have passed over before, but in their records, never before at full hurricane strength. and that is what is forecast to happen at least right now, the storm is moving so quickly, you won't have time to slow down when it passes over tallahassee. and that could be a real problem because this city has so many of the huge, gorgeous live oak trees the c

senior correspondent steve harrigan and hard-hit gulfport florida.gist kiana lewis is alive in asheville, north carolina. it looks like there is some flooding still happening there in that area. what more can you tell us? >> yes, it is significant flooding at this point in time for it where i am standing right now is usually riverside drive it's usually a street it's a miles out where the river is overflowing its banks and obviously this is not an area you want to be around let alone driving in. that's it not the on thing we are seeing here. when i put it this way you look at the french broad river notice it is inches away from the edge of the river. parade the water has risen so high that it has pushed most of this debris right up on the bridge here. folks that he still trying to pick up the pieces at this point. everything is so fresh here in asheville but you don't have service, you don't have the power. a lot of people of not been able to get in touch with their family or friends and are simply stepping out for the first time after helene is pass

here in gulfport, there was a curfew from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. today.eally concerned about that storm surge. it did flood some low-lying areas here in this area, but no major damage. the airports now starting to get back open. we understand that the airlines are starting to resume flights out of new orleans and also the gulfport, biloxi airport as well. people are assessing how much damage they have to deal with. we have some cities like new orleans talking about their sewer system has been flooded. right now, they're asking residents to conserve water as people are now trying to figure out just exactly how much damage they have as they try to get things back going again, chris. >> steven, thank you for that. bill, will this storm finally get out of there? >> the gulf and the areas that have all the power outages, the weather is fine today, and the hopefully will get a lot of people back up during the day today and of course as we head towards the weekend. but there is still concerns. we still have what's left of francine heading for the memphis area. t

let's bring in cnn's carlos suarez and gulfport, florida. what are you seeing there, carlos pamela, good morning. >> so we are inside of a restaurant here in gulfport that was basically destroyed by the strong surge and the intense kind of the wins that we saw last night yesterday. so this is what it looks like right now. you can see exactly where everything inside this restaurant was just pushed up against each other because of the about six to eight feet of storm surge that pushed in here. if you can go to your left here, i can show you just how close this restaurant is to the bay here that part there yesterday began inching in closer to this area around two or 3:00 in the afternoon. and by about eight and 9:00 at night, the water was probably about but as high as that mark right there where you see that kind of exposed wall right there. we spoke to the owner of this place just a few minutes ago and she was telling us that they had just finished some repairs from last year's hurricane. i've been here for three years now covering three diff

live on the ground in gulfport mississippi. how does it look? >> it is windy and wet.e had about 3 inches of rain so far in mississippi. we are most concerned with the overnight hours and the isolated tornado potential and the storm surge. now the storm gusts and francine made landfall as a category to earlier this evening at 5:00 pm in southern louisiana. it has since weakened to a tropical storm it is expected to continue to weekend -- week and as we go through this next 24-hour period. we are still expecting a lot of rain. to that point i want to jump to the wii has not -- louisiana quickly. we do have a flash flood emergency in place right now. we have over 300,000 power outages across louisiana. a lot of rain. too much rain has come in in a short period of time. this storm will continue to lift through mississippi as we go through the day today. here in gulfport with 3 inches of rain, sustained wind, 40 hyphen 45 miles per hour it has been tough. we will continue to follow this story closely on fox weather. team coverage as we get you through hurricane francine. >

that tornado watch that goes all the way to gulfport. pascagoula, mississippi. and we're going to see more of that tonight. that's going to extend into tomorrow. tropical storm warnings go to mobile. you see they go quite far into parts of mississippi, too, almost to jackson there, just south of i-20. so, i want to take you through the timing and the impacts. couple more hours yet of that surge, which could go 5 to 10 feet at most, but a lot of places will end up with 2 to 5 feet, just plenty to add a whole human's height of water. then, rain, 4 to 8 inches widespread. up to 12 inches locally. you see the wind alerts that go up to memphis or birmingham? huntsville, too. that's because even as it loses its tropical constitution tomorrow, you could see wind gusts upwards of 45 miles per hour. definitely could see tornadoes. you see how far-reaching the outer bands are? tallahassee, panama city tomorrow morning getting hit by that. and then the heavy rain into western tennessee. we see an elevated risk of flash flooding. >> david: ginger zee with us here tonight. w

tropical storm warnings to mobile and gulfport. let's give you all the impacts. 5 to 10 feet of storm surge is the big first one. the outer bands could make it to you by tomorrow morning. any last minute anything you have to get done, you have to do it in the next couple of hours. tomorrow is going to be really tough to get around. with that big bubble of water coming onshore, the right side of that storm, new orleans is now it with lake upon cpontchar expecting 2 to 5 feet of surge. watch this thing carefully. we have that storm surge, which is the largest loss of life and property, david, but inland rain that by the end of the week could go all the way up with up to, you know, 4 to 6 inches in southern illinois or western tennessee. >> david: we'll be watching it with you, ginger, thank you. >>> we're going to turn to the fire emergencies in the west near los angeles. a new fire tonight exploding in orange county. the airport fire accidentally started by public works crews and threatening communication towers that are critical to

carlos, live for us there in gulfport. we appreciate it. let's go to cnn meteorologist derek van dam. he's tracking conditions and apalachicola, which is along the florida panhandle and franklin county in which quite frankly, derek, we have said a lot but here in recent hurricane seasons, we're hearing that helene could bring devastating storm surge there yeah, that's definitely true. >> and we're keeping a very keen eye to the sky around here because on top of that storm surge threat is the threat of waterspouts moving inland. there was a specific scotia in from the weather prediction center that highlighted this area, franklin county and apalachicola, where i am for these incoming water spouts. we've been monitoring very closely to see if any of these briefs spin-ups come through, but that's just one of a myriad of problems. threats that thinks this area you can see other vacant streets that line apalachicola, mandatory evacuations for all of franklin county. but i want to show you the pooling of the water. this is inland flooding because

let's go to steve harrigan is alive and hard-hit gulfport florida which is just outside tampa. >> arthel, the death toll now at 52 it is been climbing all morning but it's likely to keep on climbing here in florida 200 miles from where the storm crossed in pinellas county there have been nine deaths. most of those deaths from drowning this is such a huge storm really caught some people far away from the eye by surprise. mainly it was a storm surge bring a wall of water here about 8 feet high. all those nine who died here were under mandatory evacuation for it so they stayed and did not leave and died but even for those who survived the storm and have their property intact, many say there's a real sense of loss after the storm. >> the scenes we are seeing around the island, entire houses are missing. or flattened in on themselves. it is gone for the downtown is completely destroyed. the post office destroyed pete brian's big deck is gone. it is hard to take in. >> as the clean up here is underway a lot of generators going that is making it tough electricity still not restored across the s
