and woody guthrie. woody guthrie got a job singing on the progress of radio station in los angeles.gan to circulate around the migrant camps. some were cosmetic show places set up by the farm security administration and these were great places to be. they are democratically run, will provide for and clean and sanitary. but there wasn't nearly enough to cope with the magnitude of the dust bowl crisis in california. the majority of camps he would have visited were slums. they called them hoovervilles anywhere across the country, named after the president on whose watch the depression was ushered in. these were places you maybe have families of eight or ten getting by on $3 a week between them picking cotton in the san walking valley. back east president roosevelt declared if i went to work in a factory the first thing i would do would be joined the union. which sounded pretty good coming from the oval office. i don't think any president has gone so far as to endorse the right of labor to organize. even with that backing of the reality for the radical migrants attempting to organize in

guthrie spent 30 years on the ocean chasing drug smugglers.isguise him. >> the smugglers asked me if i was sitting down. i said why. why. he says well, i'm in the bahamas and the word is that jimmy trindade's donzi, 38 foot donzi was sabotaged by somebody pouring water in the gas tank and this endeavor was related to a cocaine smuggling venture. >> this was the first time someone had come forward with specific information that drug smugglers were involved in jimmy's disappearance. investigators had found a small baggy of cocaine and some rest due on the boat, but guthrie ruled out that the drugs belonged to jimmy. so if they weren't jimmy's, who did they belong to, and why was the boat sabotagesabotaged. looking for clues, guthrie went back and questioned the coast guard men that boarded the boat. one told guthrie when he checked the gps to find out where jimmy had traveled that night, the gps for the most part had been erased. >> i couldn't determine where exactly the boat left from and get its course and where it was headed. it was strange.

that is the first lesson he told woody guthrie from beyond the grave as it were.think of joe hill's reworking of the old salvation army hymn in sweet in suite by-and-by as a case in.. joe hill ticket and turned it into what became the anthem to american labor in the first half of the 20th century, the preacher in this and the slave. there are people who think that is the reason why joe hill was executed for writing that song and you know, the preacher in the slave. do you all know that? it is kind of important. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ a very influential song and american labor history. i would like to bring in savannah guthrie now. as i understand it, these proceedings, this is an appeal court proceeding. is this the end or can they appeal to a higher court if the family is not satisfied with the verdict? >> the defendant is entitled to an appeal and so is the prosecution. >> the prosecution as well? >> that is a big difference between our system and their system. the prosecution is appealing at this level right now. remember amanda knox got a 26-year sentence and she is appealing. that's the process we have right now. they are asking for a greater sentence. they want a life sentence and want six months solitary confinement. this jury is considering whether to lessen the charges or the sentence, but whether to increase the sentence and if either side doesn't like the result, they can apply for an appeal in the italian supreme court. they don't get it as a matter of right or discretion. it's unlike this process. this appeal was a redo of the trial. there is live testimony and witnesses. the supreme supreme court

. >>> let's go inside to the studio where savannah guthrie filling in for natalie with the headlines. >>> all eyes on the economy as the september unemployment report is released. the labor department says the u.s. economy added 103,000 jobs in september. however, that was not enough to lower the unemployment rate, which remains at 9.1%. and nearly half of those gains came from striking verizon workers returning to their jobs. >>> the parents of a missing baby girl in missouri denied today that they have stopped cooperating with police. on thursday, kansas city investigators said jeremy irwin and deborah bradley refused to answer any more questions. nbc's peter alexander has more from kansas city this morning. peter, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. day four of this investigation to try to find this 10-month-old baby lisa irwin and a lot changed overnight. for one, police as you noted said that the parents of lisa are no longer cooperating with them but we spoke to the parents and they said they are, in fact, cooperating, and willing to again meet with police

. >> inside and savannah guthrie is filling in while natalie is on assignment. >> under way in eastern ohio for exotic and dangerous animals that escaped from a wildlife preserve and john yang is in zanesville, ohio, with the latest. john, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. this is one of the most bizarre hunts that have been going on in this central ohio or eastern ohio area. investigators tell nbc news that they believe that terry thompson, the man that owned this exotic wildlife reserve killed himself, took his own life and they believe that he may have himself released these animals before he took his own life. these are exotic wild animals that thompson rescued and kept at this farm. lion, tigers, primates, black bear, grizzly bears now sort of hunting them down and think overnight they were able to take out maybe 30 or 35 of the animals. there are still some at large. and there are still some on the farm itself that they are -- the columbus zoo officials are planning to try to take alive and take to the columbus zoo. meanwhile, now that the sun is up offici

savannah guthrie is at the news desk. >> thanks. >>> in the news today amanda knox is on her way home at this hour to the u.s. after her conviction for the 2007 sexual assault and murder of her british roommate was overturned in an italian court on monday. nbc's lester holt is in perugia with the latest. lester, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. so much has happened. hard to imagine yesterday amanda knox was sitting not far from this place in prison, wondering what her fate would be. her cameras captured her, where she began her journey this morning at the rome airport, walking with family and supporters, at one point we see her embrace part of the entourage there at the airport before boarding a plane to london and catching a flight presumably a nonstop back to seattle. all this happening as the prosecutor here in italy has vowed he will not rest with the decision but will appeal it to the italian supreme court. that is not a slam dunk. it will take several weeks, perhaps months to process that. for amanda knox it matters little because chances of her being extradite
