harry hairston has been following these developments for some time now. harry, we know that two of fattah's former associates pleaded guilty in federal cases last year and at the time it looked like that fattah the congressman was the actual focus of this probe. now we have this wide-ranging 29-count indictment for racketeering. can you boil this all down for us here? >> i can tell you back in 2007 when fattah had that fated attempt to run for mayor, he lost that and had taken that $1 million loan. that's basically the nucleus of it. he was able to pay back as you heard, $400,000 of that loan. but the vefs-h investigation began when the feds believed he misappropriated money to pay back. by misappropriate rating that money, they say he tried to cover up by giving that money back paying back that loan, and doing it through charitable organizations. that, they say, was a form of misappropriation. last year two of his associates were indicted and pled guilty. their sentencing has been constantly pushed back. it's been the belief for many they were talking to

harry hairston joins us now. you spoke with the congressman when these allegations began to surface. you spoke with him today, he spoke today when the charges were announced? >> yes, he did come out and speak today, that's right. for the past eight years, a cloud of suspicion has followed him. today on capitol hill congressman fattah stated neither he nor any of the others named in the indictment did anything wrong. >> i understand but the rico charge, what's unusual about it the one thing on first blush i can agree with he said this at the end, i think it may be one of the more important items, these are allegations that the people involved are innocent until proven otherwise. >> for years, congressman chaka fattah has maintained his innocence ever since losing the mayoral campaign. he's been on the fbi radar. today's indictment alleges the congressman use campaign funds to pay off his son's college debt. over the last year i've asked both the congressman and his son about those claims. both have told me those c
