let's get right to nbc's hallie jackson who's following the campaign. hall hal hallie, what do we know. >> reporter: multiple sources are confirming that campaign manager corey lewandowski has left the trump campaign and in fact confirming a statement from trump spokesperson hope hicks saying that they are grateful to lewandowski for his dedication and for his hard work but that he will be parting ways. this information of course first reported by "the new york times" just moments ago. this is a significant move, jose. here's a couple of reasons why. number one, lewandowski has been part of trump's inner circle from the very beginning, from even before day one. he is part of that sort of original group of trump supporters who were with him since he came down that escalator at trump tower, what, just over a year ago now. so lewandowski there from the beginning has been a very loyal member of the trump team and trump conversely has been loyal to lewandowski, even with some of the issues that came up. as you know, lewandowski has been facing charges or had

that trump stepped up the rhetoric, going after warren in an exclusive phone call with nbc's hallie jackson. he told nbc, quote, i hope that she's selected as the vice presidential running mate. i will speak very openly about her if she is. she is one of the least productive senators in the united states senate. we call her pocahontas for a reason. adding she used the fact that she was native american to advance her career. elizabeth warren is a total fraud. i know it. she made up her heritage which i think is racist. i think she's a racist, actually, because what she did was very racist. now when asked by nbc if his comments on warren might undermine his latest campaign makeover trump said quote, i don't care. i do me. i do what i do. i've listened to this for a long time at the beginning of the primaries. he should do this. he should do that. i won in a landslide. the latest nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows a majority of republicans, 52%, still say they prefer someone else as their presidential nominee, versus 45% who say they're satisfied with trump. and during a republican nati

i want to go to hallie jackson. were on capitol hill talking to republicans who have been upset with the way that trump has been conducting himself. what did you learn? >> reporter: let's talk about, too, jose, what is happening with some of the republicans, just within the last hour or so, new reaction from not just house speaker paul ryan but also john kasich, obviously the governor of ohio, former rival of donald trump. he was asked if he could support donald trump as president, if he will endorse him. kasich said it is hard to say. there is absolutely a window in which he could go to the convention in cleveland in his home state and not have endorsed the presumptive nominee. the republican nominee for president at least at that point in the convention and this is significant given that it comes from the governor of a huge, hugely important swing state in the general election. kasich said he spoke with donald trump a couple of weeks ago, trump asked him what he would do to support him and kasich said they're like

i want to get to hallie jackson. as we start this conversation here, what's interesting is paul manafort was supposed to be the guy in charge of washington outreach. so the question corey lewandowski has to be asking himself right now is well, if this was the guy in front of washington outreach and we were getting beat up by folks on washington most recently paul ryan request when he was speaking to the host of the show, chuck todd, is was the problem lewandowski or paul manafort? the question now is what operationally will be different going forward and does this calm skittish republicans in any way? >> i think you're saying it as the news trickles out and has come out on capitol hill. republicans reacting or beginning to react to this. you mentioned comments from speaker ryan to chuck todd. that is reflected in a conversation i just had with senator john cornyn saying when it comes to, for example, the gun control debate happening here, people should vote their conscience and not be suede by whatever donald trump w

hallie jackson, one of the first people to help confirm this news for the network.s kind of a big surprise for a man who has been a part of a very embattled campaign and trump has always stood by him. >> and from the very beginning of this campaign as well, thomas. i can tell you that myself, my colleague katy tur now have multiple sources confirming that corey lewandowski is out as campaign manager. when you talk about this being a surprise, it certainly is. just as recently as this weekend lewandowski was with trump at his rally, at his rallies in texas, in las vegas as well. so the news that he is out is surprising even to some within his own campaign. nbc news spoke with one advisor moments ago who was surprised to hear this news, who had learned about it from "the new york times," which first reported word of lewandowski's departure from the campaign. remember, lewandowski has been there from the beginning. there has been a power struggle, however, within the campaign since chief strategist paul manafort came on board a couple of months ago so perhaps this now

hallie jackson, we'll be watching your report. thank you very much. me bring in richard haas, president on the council of foreign relations. richard, become to the show. >> thanks, chuck. >> i haven't heard your reaction to what you heard from donald trump yesterday. what was your reaction? >> well, there were two parts. i think the comments as opposed to the speech, the insinuations about the president crossed a line. there simply isn't a place in our politics. we can have legitimate differences, we can have real differences, but to insinuate in any way that the president is somehow a trafficker with terrorists, again, it crosses a line. it's also ironic because this president more than most shall we say, has made going after terrorists a priority, particularly through drone strikes. so that's one thing. in terms of the speech itself, it just seems to me the entire notion of banning a class of people is intellectually and politically wrong and counterproductive. the best way to discourage people from terrorism is to have close relations with the musl
