hallie?ting a tiny bit of news out of mitch mcconnell who just spoke on the senate floor. this is a little procedural but it's kind of interesting. we were talk about this issue of the 60-vote threshold aka the filibuster and apparently senator mcconnell said he basically went directly to one of the democratic senators who is on his side about this, right? that's sort of unusual. >> reporter: yeah, so mcconnell was waiting for an agreement from schumer, not to get rid of this filibuster, of course, that's that 60-vote threshold that is needed to pass any sort of legislation on the floor. the filibuster, if that 60-vote threshold is gotten rid of then it just needs a simple majority. schumer was not giving that to mcconnell, any sort of commitment, so what mcconnell just said is that arizona democratic senator kyrsten sinema gave mcconnell her assurance that is she would not vote to get rid of the filibuster, that 60-vote threshold and that was apparently good enough for mcconnell to drop his

hallie? >> and of course, mick mulvaney over the last year has not had as his full-time job and day job being part of this administration. he's been out raising money for a hedge fund, using as his pitch his close ties to president trump, who of course is leaving office in 14 days. leigh ann, take us inside the capitol. this isn't your average government building or an office building. this is one of the most significant buildings in our country. what's it like there today? >> reporter: it's a significant building filled with history, filled with art, filled with artifact artifacts that this morning is very quiet, but lots and lots of reminders of what happened yesterday. there is damage throughout the capitol. you can see bullet holes in some of the glass in some doors. there's missing panes and broken glass throughout the capitol. there is a dust leftover from the tear gas that is every single place you walk or move inside the capitol, ransacked offices. i could go on and on. it is very evi

shep. >> hallie, one more thing. what are your sources saying about the tepnsion or what it's like inside the white house in these waning days? >> reporter: uncomfortable is a word i think could sum it up the president is by all accounts feeling very defiant there is this talk he perhaps will resign or step down rather than face what you and kayla were just talking about prospect of second impeachment. based on the reporting that i've done and sources i've talked to, it is very difficult, if not almost impossible, to see how that would happen. president truly feels aggrieved by many accounts is isolated, but not extended group you have staffers who are feeling concerned who are still really upset about what went down on wednesday and the response to it and the way that that has been handled. so it is a very sort of tense and awkward ending to an administration that has had its share, i think it's fair to say of tense and awkward moments but nothing like this before now the president is leaving office with the shadow

>> reporter: hallie, you're right. this is usually a formality. this time it's going to be a fight, however, futile it is. what's going to happen today is that we are going to see two mahogany boxes enter the house chamber during a joint session of congress. a designated group of lawmakers are just going to read the electoral vote count. again, a formality. but what's going to happen is watch out for arizona. that is the first state we should expect to see objections from house republicans joined by senate republicans. remember, they need both house republicans and senate republicans for the objection to stand. the senate will go back to its chamber. the house and senate will then vote -- debate up to two hours separately. and then have a vote on those final -- on that final motion. it's sure to fail. the house is controlled by democrats. in the senate only 12 or 13 senators have said they would object. nowhere near the simple majority. then they go back to the house chamber and do that again through the entire alphabet and wait for the next state

hallie, you covered this administration for the almost four years now. i understand you have news to share about what is the relationship these days between vice president pence and president trump. >> in a nutshell, chuck, it's not good. i have learned from a source familiar with this that, not only did president trump not reach out to vice president pence as the events of wednesday unfolded, and remember, the vice president was in a secure location with, by the way, members of his family, his wife, his daughter, his brother had all come to be in attendance. i'm told that the president has not called vice president pence since then. it is a striking detail. it reflects the relationship between these two men andow acrimony ous it's become. the president spend days pressuring vice president pence publicly to do something he didn't have the constitutional authority to do on wednesday. further, chuck, just to advance the story more, it wasn't just the public pressure. i'm told back to mid december, weeks ago, they were behind the scenes maneuvering to essen
