born here in denmark and named as omar abdel hamid el hussein, shot dead sunday on a copenhagen street. >> a lot of shooting and a lot of shouting from people on the street. i looked out and there was a lot of policemen. and a guy, man laying on the ground. >> reporter: the gunman struck twice before he died. on saturday, he shot and killed a man attending a meeting on freedom of speech. hours later, he fired at a synagogue, killing another. early on sunday the suspect was met by police near his apartment and died in an exchange of fire. but this one-man rampage could have been so much worse. inside the synagogue, dozens of children had been taking part in a ceremony to mark the jewish end of childhood. all that separated them from the gunman was a door two police officers, and a security guard, who died in the attack. his name was dan uhzan. he was 37 years old. hours earlier, the gunman had claimed his first victim 55-year-old film director finn newburgh. amid the chaos outside the cafe he lay dying, as people ran to his aid. today the cafe window shows the brutality of that attack.

let's bring in hoda hamid at that conference. what dochlts as far as isil is concerned? >> reporter: it's certainly the strongest words from u.s. secretary of state john kerry. he said that the fight against isil is increasing in effectiveness and getting more and more organized. he said that so far, there have been about 2000 airstrikes, that these airstrikes meant that about 1/5 of the territory that is isil controlled was regained. he said they managed to regain some of the oil facilities that isil was controlling in both iraq and syria from which they were financing the group. so certainly from the coalition point of view, a huge breakthrough. he said also the capability of isil moving around convoys, of moving the fighters has been by and large diminished because of the threat of continued airstrikes. >> said there is age understanding here certainly among -- from the conversation we heard, is that to fight isil you need to have a more comprehensive approach apart from political and it comical reforms in countries where you have more of the young men who are willing

we still say -- [ gunfire ] >> reporter: hours before this brazen gun attack the gunman omar abdel hamidsein was posting this pledge of allegiance to isis leader al baghdadi on his facebook page. he was shot dead by police after two people were killed and others wounded in attacks on a cartoonist attending a free speech event and at a synagogue. but he wasn't alone. monday two young men charged, 19 and 22 years old. prosecutors say the two men had a prior agreement with the gunman to help him hide out after this attack but they hid the weapon. the two men are now being charged with accessories to two counts of murder and accessories to five counts of attempted murder. according to denmark's national public broadcaster, el hussein had only been out of jail two weeks before the attacks. he was convicted last year for a violent, unprovoked stabbing on a commuter train in 2013. >> people going to syria and iraq to learn to use weapons, he got his education in using weapons in dehumanizing other people and able to kill them here in denmark and in civilian areas in the danish state. >> reporte

the gunman identified as omar ablel hamid el hussein. danish media say he created a facebook page before the attack that carried a pledge of allegiance to isis. there was a scare today at the site of the first shooting. a suspicious package was later found not to be a threat. i'm joined by kelly cobiella what more have we learned about the gunman? >> reporter: craig we're seeing some sort of contradictory pictures of this gunman this 22-year-old born in denmark to palestinian parents. friends described him as a good guy with a good heart, loyal to his friends. but then there's this other picture of a man tied up with criminal gangs with a criminal record as well. he was reportedly serving 15 months in prison for stabbing a man in the leg on a commuter train. a reporter at one of his court appearances said that he didn't appear to be religious at all. he appeared to be a hardened criminal shaved head and pock marked with scars, unfeeling. he said in fact quote, he didn't seem to be religious at all, quite the opposite. but at some point s
