hampton pearson looks ahead for the month, who is finding work and where the jobs are coming from. >> reporter: leading economists predict a job market rebound in september from the surprising downturn in august that saw employers adding just 142,000 workers to payroll. breaking a six-month winning streak of more than 200,000 jobs per month. new claims for jobless benefits fell again last week, the four-week moving average is now below 300,000, moving back to pre-recession levels and planned layoffs from major businesses are more. they predict strong private sector growth up 213,000 in september according to the payroll processer adp with the accent on better paying jobs. >> it is across every industry and across every size, looking at the data the quality of the job growth is improving. if you go back early in the recovery it was mostly low-paying. two to three years ago we see high paying, now we see job growth across the spectrum. >> manufacturing and construction have slowed in the last two months. and auto sales, while still on the rise, are off the record face of a year ago. but

for "nightly business report," i'm hampton pierson, in washington. >>> now that qe3 is over, the big questions, why did the fed launch that third round of asset buying? and did the central bank's historic spending really work? steve liesman takes a look. >> the fed's decision to end the third round of quantative easing raises one question, did it work. did the $1.6 trillion of bond purchases in the fed's two years achieve the fed's goal of helping the u.s. economy, pumping up inflation and lowering the unemployment rate. there is two ways to look at it. you can start with the u.s. data. since qe 3 has launched, growth rate has been at an unremarkable rate, about a half a point. job growth went to 245,000 now. and the unemployment rate fell by about two points. the stock market surged. but another way to find out if qe worked in the u.s. is to look at europe. over the same time the u.s. bought hundreds of billions of dollars of bonds, the rate climbed by two million euros, now, the fed is fretting over economies that are near inflation. >> history has told us the central banks who tig

hampton pearson has more behind the latest job numbers. >> reporter: much to the relief of both wall street and main street job growth rebounded sharply in september, from august. the labor department says that job gains for the last three months averaged 224,000 when you include upward revisions for july and august. and the headline unemployment rate is now 5.9%, the lowest since the summer of 2008. >> the unemployment rate now below 6%. when you combine that with initial unemployment claims below 300,000 solidly, what it says is that the labor force is getting to that point where it is what we would call fall employment. and that means that wages are going to start increasing more quickly in the months and quarters ahead. >> wage growth, however, was flat in september and up just 2% over the last year. paychecks got bigger because people worked longer hours and recent data showed that some of that money is getting spent. the job gains were broad based with professional and business sectors leading the way. and the labor department says the creation of more higher paying jobs is now

joined now by cnbc's hampton pierson over the labor department. what's your general reaction and which numbers stood out to you most? >> well, this is one of those jobs reports that is good for both main street and wall street for the reasons you mentioned. when you just look at the numbers. first of all, as you said, we had the big bounceback from august. it's a lot better to be looking at a headline september number of a gain of 208,000 jobs versus august. by the way, that august number broke basically a six-month winning streak, if you will, where we had been above 200,000 jobs every month. and, as you mentioned, too, so we had the revisions as well to the august numbers. we've got unemployment now below 6%. the interesting part of that is total unemployment decreased by 329,000 last month to 9 million. down significantly from where it was a year ago. >> hampton pierce sopierson, th. >>> obama vowing to not give up the immigration fight. he also gave a shoutout to one of our own. >> i want to congratulate tonight's outstanding honorees. jose di
