ktvu's robert handa joins us now. he's live in san jose with this report. >> reporter: we're here along the guadalupe river in san jose where there are usually a number of homeless camps. many homeless have left looking for better protection from the cold. it probably shouldn't surprise us when the weather gets chilly in november. >> it's hot weather and now it's changing to cold. so it kind of makes you wonder. okay what kind of weather are we going to have. you can't prepare for it. >> reporter: some can prepare some can't. or at least not as well. the south bay's largest homeless agency will open or expands three new shelters next week for the winter but went into emergency mode today because of this cold snap. >> it's really cold. if you don't have a shelter some where with a roof over your head to the point where your bones ache when you get up in the morning if you're next to the tracks or under a bush or everyone if you're trying to sleep in your vehicle. >> how big will the demand be do you think? >> i think i

robert handa. >>> community activists tonight are calling on the fda to quickly approve the use of a bay area medication created to prevent hiv. the drug reduced the rate of infection. when blood tests confirm the medication was present in a man's bloodstream the infection rate dropped 95%. >> can we implement this at a public health level. will this actually have an effect on new hiv levels in san francisco and what's it's potential to do so. we don't know that yet. >> reporter: the study also showed the gay men who took the pill engaged in less risky sex. >>> we have a follow up tonight on a story we brought you last week. it involves a man who hired a local moving company to move his belongings then his things disappeared. today not only did he get his stuff back, but helped us discover that others may be involved. >> reporter: investigators recently found this storage facility which was rented a couple of months ago by the owner of a moving company, ron mar who is under investigation for hoarding his customers things. he is out of the country and out of the jurisdiction. >> repor

ktvu's robert handa is live now in san jose to show us the emergency response. robert. >> reporter: julie, there are some south bay agencies trying to help out the homeless tonight. we will give you a quick look at one program going on right now. this is a church in east san jose where families are being fed a holiday meal by homeless agency that says the current cold snap should be treated as a life and death situation. >> reporter: it is a little bit of warmth to battle the bitter cold outside. about 200 families are having turkey dinners tonight, being served by channel deliverance ministry and volunteers from the zion church. the pastor says many people are newly homeless because of foreclosure or health care issues and aren't experienced in dealing with the freezing cold weather. >> it's an emergency. it's like a natural disaster. when people on the streets and it's 25 degrees, i don't see how they are going to survive long and a lot of them do die over time due to that kind of exposure. >> reporter: the south bay's largest homeless agency ehc life builders
