ktvu's robert handa is in santa cruz with the latest on both developments. robert? >> reporter: right now the police department remains closed as officer mourn but we have new information on the memorial and what happened from investigators and neighbors. >> reporter: santa cruz police announced a public memorial on march 7, many people paying tribute say they feel compelled to attend. >> when i drive to work, you know, i feel like i feel them. it is just -- just unthinkable. >> reporter: this afternoon they provided new information on the investigation, saying loren baker and elizabeth butler were not shot as they approached jeremy goulet's house as reported but had been talking with jeremy goulet through a closed door. >> he appeared from another location and ambushed them. >> reporter: a neighbor was questioned by the officers minutes before. >> there was shots and that is -- i thought that -- that they had taken out the bad guy but it turned out the other way. >> reporter: someone who parked near the shoot out counted his blessings. >> this one happened to be --

robert handa is on the scene. >> reporter: the search continues for this man that stabbed a woman here just a few hours ago. this is the crime scene where you can see investigators are still removing evidence. now the san jose police department has spread out throughout the neighborhood going door to door, yard to yard, around the residential heading street area. now we're not showing you specific locations so we don't compromise the search. police are asking residents to be on the look out for a dark haired man about 5'8" believed to be a philipino man on the run after what police call a brutal homicide. an ambulance rushed the stabbing victim away just before 3:00 this afternoon but police say she died before she could be treated at the hospital. witnesses say they watched as she apparently argued with a man in the parking lot next to the togo east restaurant. they were horrified as the man suddenly began attacking her with a knife. >> the lady was on the floor and he was just stabbing her in her stomach area. you could see her stabbing her numerous times. >> reporter: while police w

ktvu's robert handa is live in santa cruz with details on the new location. robert? >> reporter: the police department has decided to switch thursday's public memorial from santa cruz to san jose's downtown hp pavillion. now, deputy police chief steve clark says the change was necessary because of overwhelming interest by law enforcement agencies and the community. that interest was reflected today, when police officers returned to the streets. santa cruz county sheriffs deputies honored returning police patrols today. the sheriff's department and chp took over city duties, while the 94 santa cruz officers grieved for investigators, loran butch baker and elizabeth butler, killed tuesday in the line of duty. >> it's tough. the first time you jump into that patrol car or walk through investigations, you know, you go past the cubicles and the offices, i think that's tough. >> reporter: many people told us officers may see a changed community. >> people are going to be more likely to speak up and, you know, call the police when they see something that isn't right. >> rep
