democrats are harkining back of course to those long ground troop engagements in iraq and afghanistan. saying we don't want there to be overly broad language. we want this to expire after that three years or even a shorter amount of time and republicans are saying this may not give the president and military commanders enough authority. what the president asked for this morning, not give them enough authority to do what they need to eradicate the enemy. >> moving on a funding bill has not passed for the department of homeland security. what john boehner, house speaker hshs to say. >> the house has done its job. ask senate democrats when they're get off their [ bleep ] and do something, other than to vote no? >> well -- how he feels about it. when can we expect action on this? >> what we're going to see is a continued animosity, both between, by the way, between john boehner and senate democrats and between john boehner and senate republicans. a difference's opinion what to do going forward. dhs funding runs out february 27th. about two weeks to figure out this impasse. the issue boehn

lost some of our greatest champions in the congress with the retirement of george miller and tom harkin, after 40 years extraordinary careers. to have the people you just heard from and have john conyers committed despite a republican house and senate, he is dedicated. he will stay here. he will be here. i don't know about 50 years, but he will be here for the anniversary in nine years and 22 days, and it makes us all breathe easier. we in the nonprofit and social movement world, we know it is a combination of heat from the streets and smart legislating from congress that will change this country. we are deeply honored and moved and thankful for what you have done. we would like to ask you to come up and say little bit. congressman john conyers. religion, after all, harkins for the eternal unchanging truth and modernism, as we have been seeing is built on the inside -- insight that the truth may not be what we thought it was after all. and by the early 1900s, there seems to be a lot of evidence. it is hard not to peek ahead, to see part of the negative reaction, especially among the young to the death and destruction of world war i. not that this disillusion started with world war i, but world war i certainly added to it. as we have seen in some of the books we have read this semester, right, some of those truths that young people have been raised on included the idea that war was noble. that war invigorated american manhood. but for a lot of americans in the aftermath of world war i proud of the effort to be sure had to admit that the actual experience had been one that -- jennifer keenan's book captures this perfectly -- bad planning hideous conditions, extreme terror, let alone death and carnage. much of it eventually -- not right away -- much of it seemed eventually senseless. we will come back to that as we are wrapping u

i want to start by acknowledging tom harkin and commend his years. he was a tireless advocate for those without a voice and will be missed as we all know. i also want to acknowledge and congratulate our new chairman senator alexander. i look forward to working with you, as well. we have had a number of conversations. as we both adjust to our new roles we have one belief we mentioned every time we talk and that is we think working together this committee can really get exciting work done in the coming two years. talking to our colleagues i am very excited about what we can do together in the coming weeks and months. i am ready to get to work especially on an issue as important as the topic of this committee hearing, education. in fact, this is the issue that got me into politics. throughout my career first as a preschool teacher and then on a school board in my own state senate in washington and here in the united states senate i have been committed to making sure every child has someone fighting for them and their future. serving on this committee i

the idea that bush is a reform conservative, yes, it might harken back to jack kemp t also harkins backsh of 1998. he rain a campaign on reforming schools and looking at minority communities, doing well and improving minority performance in schools and lifting kids out of poverty. i'm not saying i endorse the idea, but that's been jeb's consistent message. >> has there been change here in terms of strategically whether this is bush or the other republicans, it was striking to me the economic message he was delivering is not one we've been hearing from republicans the last few years. we've had a few months of pretty good economic news in the obama presidency, the bush message was it's not that bad, but it could be better. has there been a shift here on how republicans are talking about economic questions? >> i think there has been a shift. i'm out in iowa, i sat down with a lot of jeb bush allies. they make the argument that the republican party is changing. in 2008 and 2012 the republican caucuses went to a favorite of the evangelical right. because bush is more in tune to economic ineq
