the new faces, john harlan, potter stewart, and charles whittaker. can either of you talk about how the dynamics of the court have changed with these three new justices? where are the factions? >> at the court at this time what you had was the liberal branch of the court led by the chief justice earl warren and joined by justice william brennan, william douglas, and hugo black. and then you have the conservative side of the court which would include the newcomers, harlan, whittaker and frankfurter and then tom c. clark who sometimes went between the two camps both liberal and conservative. tom c. clark was a u.s. attorney general. he worked on the cora matsui case. he was involved in the ex clues orders working with earl warren. he's a truman appointee but very interested in civil rights issues and also interested in anti-communism. so he was a little bit all over the map. so you had sort of a four justices who we would characterize as liberal or some would call them judicial activism. those things are often different. and then four who were more con
