harry smith is in tuscaloosa, alabama, tonight and will lead us through our coverage. harry? katie, good evening... >> smith: katie, this is the deadliest natural disaster since hurricane katrina, and the scope of the devastation is hard to put into words unless you see it with your own eyes. which is what president obama did today. the president and first lady toured the splintered homes here in tuscaloosa and met with some survivors. a visit he called "heartbreaking." as the search for victims continues, at least 318 deaths have been confirmed across the south, including more than 220 of them here in alabama. 1,700 people in the state were injured and more than 600,000 homes are still without power tonight across the south. mark strassmann is with us here in tuscaloosa and i think it's safe to say that this is a city that is still very much in shock. >> reporter: shock and frustration, harry. when you walk through neighborhoods like this one, people ask "when's help coming?" right now they have to rely on each other. alberta city, another part of tuscaloosa's landscape of r

but todd harris, a serious question.'re chairman of the rnc and you've got this bigger-than-life personality if he gets into the debates, he's going to qualify for every debate and he's making this the issue. this is a problem for the republican party, is it not? >> it is a problem. it's not just a problem when he's talking about it. i frankly think it's a problem across the board. you know, we are in an economic environment right now where two-thirds of the country thinks that the president is doing a poor job handling the economy. his approval ratings are upside down among independents, and we're talking about birth certificates? we have real issues that we can lay real licks on the president with. and the more oxygen that this birther issue sucks out of this debate, the better it is for democrats, because it makes republicans look like nuts. >> do you go -- if you're mitt romney, do you go to donald trump and say, dude, cut it out. talk about your business acumen. >> i wouldn't, because donald trump would then go on t

[laughter] then harry was furious. whenever it was his own family, maybe he would overreact, or he just couldn't contain himself. and then he kept powell at a distance, didn't invite him to social events for the rest of his presidency. but it was that oscillation, but some of the other presidents were more willing to do that, especially as we get to more recent times.

harry lew graduated from santa clara high school in 2008. the principal says this year's senior class, they were freshmen when lew was a senior. he said right now, many are trying to cope with this loss the best way they can. >> it is sad. sad to the community. heart breaking to the family. which is where your thoughts immediately to go. >> reporter: santa clara high school principal remembers lance corporal harry lew during lew's senior year. >> a kid that was fairly well engrained in the school. a good student, nice kid. really, really nice young man. >> reporter: lew died on sunday while supporting combat operations in helmand province in afghanistan. military officials say the 21-year-old marine and his unit have been there for five months working with the afghan national security forces to keep the peace. the u.s. marine corps has not released how lew died. >> he was a really nice kid. always had a smile on his face. >> reporter: lew was a teacher's assistance for patrice during her senior year. she was stunned when she heard the news.
