let's go to harry enten at the magic wall. we're here again at the eve of another actual moment in our election history. so as voters are getting ready to head to the polls in new hampshire, who has the momentum? >> you know, i wish you were here with me, but we'll have to work through the magic of television. >> we will. >> we will. this is the choice for the nominee. our cnn poll has trump with an 11 point advantage. that is up from where it was last month when it was in fact just a seven point advantage for donald trump. mo monmouth university, an eight point edge. trump clearing 50%. and of course desantis dropped out of the race, he is at 6% in that poll. he really had no shot in the state of new hampshire. >> and you do wonder who those could be added to, will it go to haley or trump. we'll see tomorrow. but also desantis surprising many people when he decided to exits the race and by the way less than 48 hours before the primary. so you wonder will his actual numbers, although they are lower compared to the others, will

let's go to cnn senior data reporter harry enten at that magical wall. we know if the rnc was poised to declare trump the presumptive nominee. this would really be unprecedented, of course, at this point in the race. right? >> unheard of. there is no other word around. it a competitive gop primary -- ending with a presumptive gop nominee. march 4th, back in 2008, it's the earliest in the last decade and a half, it's also the earliest on record in the modern primary era. and of course, keep in mind, laura, at that particular point, would already run through super tuesday, already run through most of the delegates. other dates more recently, 2012, april 25th. 2016, when of course trump clinched that particular cycle, may 3rd. laura, the idea would have a president nominee in january is frankly off the maps and not anything awkward have ever heard of, it is before this year. >> by the way, only a tiny fraction of primary voters have even had a chance to even cast their votes. you've got iowa, new hampshire, now accepting the rest of the 48 states -- can you

. >>> with me now harry enten, and harry, how did iowa get to be such a big deal? >> well, how did iowa get to be such a big deal, and i love this question. because every four years and it is iowa, iowa, iowa, and this is the reason we care about iowa, because these are the folks who trail in the national polls, but they won the national nomination. jimmy carter won iowa and won the nomination. >> came out of nowhere. >> yes. and john kerry in 2004 and who could forget barack obama who trailed hillary clinton in 2008. >> this is explaining why it is a big deal, but every person on the screen is a democrat, and we are talking about the republican caucuses here. >> yes, we are talking about the republican caucuses, and the big gop frontrunners who lost the republican caucuses. ronald reagan, and george bush in 1980, and i was not alive for those campaigns, but you do remember them, and you can recall that these folks got scared and then new hampshire was a real race afterwards. >> in a way, the republican side, the story is who has not won or who didn't win in iowa,

. >>> in the meantime, i'm joined by cnn senior data reporter, harry enten. we're talking a lot about new hampshire, which is, by the way, the granite state. >> that's correct. >> why is new hampshire such an attractive target for nikki haley? >> you know, omar was getting at it, and it essentially comes down to the electorate. the moderate share of the gop primary electorate. this is the group donald trump does worst with. moderates make up a significant share of that electorate there. they're 36%. that's significantly more than the 27% nationally, and of course, that 17% in iowa, which is a very conservative caucus electorate. so the fact is, new hampshire, you know new england, you're from new england. those northern new england republicans and those that can vote in the republican primary are far more moderate on the republican side than the rest of the country. >> can democratic vote in the republican primary? >> no, they can. >> donald trump said they could. >> donald trump says a lot of things but you have to be registered undeclared or registered repu

you know a big question that -- i want to bring in cnn senior political writer and analyst harry enten for more on what the belichick and just could actually mean for 2024 when it comes to donald trump. harry, listen, you talk about this, issue we talk about colorado, now maine is in play, but the thing about maine, it could actually be a bigger problem for trump than being off the ballot in colorado. tell me, we are the actually need to stay on the ballot to win? >> yes, look, laura, last week, or a few weeks ago we spoke about colorado, i mentioned that i don't really care. i don't care because colorado is not a competitive state in general elections and politics. rock obama won twice, hillary clinton when italy, joe biden won easily. mean it's a different matter altogether. keep in mind even though trump lost the state both in 2020 and 2016, you only lost it by three points back in 2016. so can be a competitive state. more than that, maine along with nebraska is one of the two states in the nation that actually awards an electoral vote to the winner of each congressional district in

. >> and harry enten is joining us. polls are a snapshot in time, but there is a clear tread line here. >> yeah, closing that gap. she is up to 32%. look at that, a 7 point margin. look back here, it was a 22 point margin. ron desantis now just at 5%. and the question is why has nikki haley closed the gap in the poll. i think that gives you the reason. undeclared voters, they can vote in the state of new hampshire. and they will fueled upsets before. now nikki haley with a clear advantage, 43%, christie at 23%, trump back at 17%. back in november, she was just at 25%. it was a three car horse race. . >> and donald trump could be in new hampshire but he will be in a courtroom that he doesn't need to be in. talk about politically why he's there. >> why is he in the courtroom? this sha give you a reason why. trump's two biggest days for under if raising, one was when he was being arraigned in manhattan court. and the other one when trump was booked in fulton county jail the day of the infamous mug shot. both of those days

harry enten is here to show us why. how is the former presidents polling change with these court cases? >> reporter: if you go back ten months ago, this was an actual campaign for the presidency on the republican side. donald trump was ahead. but ron desantis was at least within 20 points, he was within striking distance, i could show you historical examples with the second place person coming back to when -- you're look now, it's just not anywhere close. donald trump now has a clear majority north of 60%, he's up over 50 points over ron desantis, that's the largest leap ever for a non incumbent at this play in the primary. if you look at the polling -- republicans actually say that these indictments have made the more likely to vote for the president and less likely, it's something that's backed up by the polling data that shows trump's lead is expanding ever wider. >> we talked about with george, he's been fundraising off this campaign? >> reporter: he's absolutely been fundraising. -- what are's two best fundraising

let's bring in cnn's harry enten. down these new polling numbers. >> reporter: i will try and do as good a job as you did last hour, boris. let's see. okay! so if we look at the state of new hampshire what do we see our latest poll showing? a seven point race. my goodness gracious? trump at 39% and haley at 34%. look at ron desantis. i don't know -- that 32% for nikki haley is the best for any candidate not named donald trump since all the way back in june. the trend is what is so key here. what do we see in the trend line? we see that nikki haley is gaining massive momentum in the granite state. if you look back at our last poll in november, what you saw is that nikki haley, get this, was 22 points behind donald trump. now she's just seven points behind donald trump, and as i mentioned, ron desantis polling through the floor. not only in third place or fourth place now, but in fifth place. and chris christie of course has been his entire campaign in new hampshire, and isn't it distant third place. >> harry, tell us w

senior data reporter harry enten joins us now to run the numbers. i guess there's some sign of haley momentum. i wouldn't call it like a ground swell earthquake sort of thing, but let's take a look at the new poll, hairy. this shows it right here. forgive my magic call amateurishness here. show us what should we be looking at here? obviously donald trump 51%, 48% now. but haley has jumped past ron desantis. that's what's interesting about this. >> i mean, yeah. she's jumped past ron desantis, but she's still 28 points behind the leader. and ron desantis right now at 16% has basically based his entire campaign on at least coming in second in the state of iowa. >> that's right. >> if this result is right, he's a dead man walking in this race because he ain't going to new hampshire and finishing any better than third place. he might finish fourth. south carolina afterwards. the fact is donald trump is well ahead in this race, and you were speaking about it with all the different folks you have had on. i have looked at all the numbers, all the different

. >> cnn's data reporter harry enten is here with new numbers on how americans see the issue. a lot of republicans have been arguing over the border wall. how do they see it? >> you know, the border wall -- president trump, when he ran the first time around, he's like, i'm going to build this border wall. and americans turned against it. there were americans who went out into the streets and protest against a border wall. take a look at perceptions of a border wall, support now versus support in 2017. look at this, support now up to 52% in a recent quinnipiac university poll. that's up 14 points from where we were back in february 2017. and the opposition has dropped tremendously, from the 50s down into the mid 40s. and i've seen this across the polling data. and this, to me, is one of the biggest, sort of, signs of how much the immigration debate in this country has changed from the trump era, in which americans were far more in favor of immigration, to now when they very much turned against it. and it's not just republicans. it's voters in the middle of the electorate as wel

harry enten is here. what is the least expensive to get? how does it compared to past super bowls? >> even as we were preparing for this segment, the cheapest ticket has become more expensive on the secondary market. it is now well over $8,000 for the cheapest to get. i don't know about you, the idea of spending $8,000 for one ticket to one game in which my teams aren't even involved, not my idea of a good time. if you look back last year, the cheapest ticket was a little less than $6,000. relatively reasonable compared to over $8,000. go back to super bowl number one. do you know what the cheapest ticket for that was? >> what? >> $6. $6. there's been inflation that's taken place, so it would be $56 in today's money, but $6 would be much more my speed. super bowl one wasn't even sold out, i could assure you that this super bowl will be sold out. >> we shouldn't say the cheapest take. it is the least expensive expensive to get. that's a better way to phrase it? >> yes. kind of like being the most beautiful person, i don't even know, in a cemetery -- >> remote island -- deserted isla

. >> harry enten is here to go behind the numbers and the rnc draft resolution that is circulating tomally declare donald trump the nominee, it's been ten days and it feels like a lot longer since voting began. has anything -- has any nominee been settled this early on? >> this is unprecedented --? ever? >> this is unprecedented. the earliest i could find on record in the gop side was 2008 when it was march 4th and there were earlier contests and super tuesday took place in early february. this is unprecedented and you see other dates when there were presichltive, and it was in 2016, the fact is that is com plotly unshall and despite being a big fan, it's an xlent point, and let's talk about other delegates. what is it? maybe 2% have been awarded and how many delegates would a nominee need? >> there are over 2,000 more delegates that need to be allocated. in order to win the nomination you need more than a thousand and the fact is that there have only been 62 delegates that have been allocated so far. we have a ton more contests to go. it's not just south carolina. it's not just nevad

we were talking with harry enten in the last hour. she has a real uphill climb in taking on trump in her home state. how is she making the case, and what are you observing? >> reporter: jim, tonight nikki haley, the last republican standing against donald trump. and you can tell from watching her up on that stage tonight that she really is relishing this. you know, some might wonder where was this nikki haley a few weeks or even a few months ago. i can tell you tonight she called trump unhinged, she suggested that he was too sensitive and overly concerned about revenge. and that she is going to continue to make this case for several weeks. you know that she says that all this time that he is spending in the courtroom, that is time that he's not spending talking about the concerns of the american people. let's listen. >> only two states have voted. there are 48 more that have to vote. no matter what donald trump thinks, he can't bully his way to the white house. it's not going to work. undeclared voters, think probably independents, make up the largest -- what harry enten and i want tok about right now is how candidates who run in this lane before, like nikki haley, have done. let's look back at 2016, harry. >> if we look back at 2016, what do we see? who is a candidate who ran like nikki haley back in 2016? it was john kasich, who came in second place, but a distant second place behind donald trump, got 16% of the vote. where did john kasich run particularly well? he ran quite well in what i would call the connecticut river valley, right in here, right in around hanover. that's of course dartmouth college, where i in fact went to school. john kasich easily won in hanover, with 42% of the vote. but the key nugget to see here, very few votes in hanover. he won there with just 688 votes. it's not good enough just to carry hanover. >> that is 2016. 2012 a little bit of a similar story. >> huntsman, best state by far. he dropped out of the race after new hampshire. he came in third place with about 17% of the vote. but, again, where do you see the huntsman yellow on the

harry enten, i think you're a one namer now. first of all she has surged. so the surge in recent weeks has been dramatic, but right now 7-point poll deficit in new hampshire. a few weeks to go until the primary. has anyone closed that gap? >> absolutely. there are four examples throughout history we can list for you that close that gap. go back to 1984 gary hart did it, pat buchanan did it. and john mccain was well behind mitt romney in 2008 in new hampshire and both of them went onto be the nominee. so the answer to your question is 100% absolutely nikki haley can close that gap in new hampshire and go onto win nationally as well. >> okay, so who is fueling her rise? >> if you know one thing about new hampshire it's that independents play a major role in that primary, perhaps more so than any of the other voting states. what we see among republicans, in fact, nikki haley is still well behind donald trump. but if you look among independents, look at that she's up by 35 points. she's down by 23 points among republicans. and i will point out, erin, this sort
