in hawaii. eric fisher, meteorologist of our boston station wbbz is very busy this morning. >> we have three storms we're watching including genevieve now a powerful storm well out in the ocean. of course, a lot of attention is on iselle which is close to hawaii. behind that is julio, about 500 miles away from the big island. still holding its own and right on its heels julio will be following a very similar pachlkt these storms are in water that are not necessarily hot but just warm enough. these are sea surface temperatures. usually your strongest storms approach hawaii when they come from the south where the water is warmer. here it's around 80 degrees. it should be enough to keep iselle a hurricane or at the very least a strong tropical storm at landfall it will cross the entire chain and expect by the time we head toward friday evening. there are a number of warnings up, hurricane warnings. the first for hawaii. in 21 years the warning is up for the big island. the entire chain under watche

iselle is making landfall in hawaii.the radar leer and it looks like it's moving more to the northwest right now north of -- hilo. now it could be raining more to the west side of the islands you got to remember it is up here. it's a 14,000-foot tall volcano. so this is interrupting the circulation that's why iselle is weakening. so it's also got some upper level wind sheer that's warning in effect for the northern and northeastern section of the big island of hawaii. you get heavier rain and also heavier flooding and potential with rock and mudslides too. so this certainly has to be watched. and just to give you the perspective on the rest of the island chain, as this is forecast to move off for the west. again i think it looks like to the jogging to the northwest and hopefully it stays south because if it stays south then most of the rest of the island chain doesn't get the winds that the big island's going to get and they don't get the rain either. but the storm forecast to weaken to 60 miles an hour by 8:00 friday mo

this is also going to be a quick clip towards hawaii. also better news if you're going there on vacation, the track is shifting more to the north. we're not looking at a direct hit from julio at this point. saturday winds of 70 miles per hour, that's when the rain bands will be impacting hawaii. it takes a quick curve off to the north of honolulu as we head throughout sunday. so it's looking a little bit better if you are headed there. but i will say with any kind of tropical system, you want to keep attention to this very, very closely. because if we get a slight track variation in another 24 hours, it could mean worse consequences for hawaii. but right now, it's the best out of all of the scenarios we've seen over the past couple of days. let's get you back here to the bay area and a look outside. it is muggy, overcast. but at least the rainfall has moved on out. you can see right now, it's hazy in the north bay, averaging 73. foggy in san francisco and 68. a little breezy across the peninsula right now with sunset expected at 8:10 thi

waiving change fees for flights to hawaii today and tomorrow. however, there are restrictions. some airlines are tighter than others. for example, hawaiian airlines will waive the change fee but you must use the ticket by august 12th. that's when the storms are expected to pass. united and delta airlines will let you use the tickets for a year. however, you may have to pay a higher fare if you fly after august 12th. hawaiian hotels are giving guests a break. the hawaiian tourism authority says most hotels won't charge a fee for cancelling a reservation this weekend. hotels also are offering so-called distress rates. now, those are discounts for guests who get stranded because of the storms. hotels are also ready with extra food and water, power generators and additional staff. >>> when traveling to tropical locations this time of year, you really should consider buying travel insurance. most policies cover hurricanes, but you need to read the fine print. you must buy the insurance before the hurricane is named, otherwise the policy will not pay.
