we sat down with the fire chief, joanne hayes-white, who was one of the first people on the scene. i asked her what she saw. >> i witnessed members of our crew, members of airline, everyone stepped up and worked together. the scene was unbelievable, something we train for. >> tell me what you saw in terms of plane. what did the inside look like? >> our crews responded about 11:30. i got on scene about noontime. many of the critical patients are already been off loaded. there was still lots of smoke emanating from the plane. piece at engine were separated from the plane and the tail was hundreds of yards down from the structure of the plane. >> you know, a lot of times when we have emergencies in the air, there's a heads-up period. the pilot radios in we're having trouble and you're able to assemble this. one happened instantly. how was the responses? >> you're absolutely right. typically we'll get an alert two, which means we have time to align ourselves and wait on the run way. we didn't have that yesterday. when the plane came down, chutes were deployed. our crews got there withi

i think both you and chief hayes white and chief suhr have been outstanding. i've been working as you know with many of my neighbors on expanding the increasing need for lighting infrastructure in district 10 which is largely formally the industrial part of san francisco. areas that are near dark, free ways, unaccepted streets which are now becoming residential. but the city has not been keeping up pace with the changing infrastructure and the needs of these new neighborhoods. lack of adequate light -- lighting has contributed to a number of public safety issues such as illegal dumping, car break ins and graffiti. additionally the overlapping jurisdictions of state and private entities prevent [speaker not understood] lighting leads to an insufficient process for those looking to make improvements. what can you do -- what can you commit to doing as mayor to prioritize and speed up the permitting, funding and installation of new lighting infrastructure in the neighborhood? and also, what -- would you support efforts by the city to install lighting on property t

joanne hayes white, san francisco fire chief is there as well. that the parts of the two victims, two 16-year-olds who died in this crash, they are right now in the air. they have left china. they left china about 5:00 our time this morning. they are taking the very same route that their daughters took just a couple of days ago. that means they are flying asiana air. they had a stopover in seoul, south korea, about 6:20 this morning. they are scheduled to land at sfo a little bit later, obviously, this evening potentially tonight. once they do land, first order of business is to talk to the san mateo coroner conducting the autopsies on the two 16-year-olds who died in this crash. now, there is speculation that one of them did not die on impact, that she may have been hit and killed by a first responder vehicle, by an emergency vehicle. we're hearing a fire truck may have hit this girl and that is what led to her death. that is not confirmed yet. that is just a speculation. san francisco mayor ed lee has been asked about that. he says that he cann

right now i have with me fire chief john hayes white, the police chief and you heard from the director of airport john martin and special agent jayday individual johnson from the fbi. let me turn it over to the public information officer for our airport for more details. >> thank you. to control the flight information again at approximately 11:27 a.m. asiana airlines flight 214 experienced an incident coming into san francisco airport. this aircraft is a boeing 777 aircraft. for a count of the passengers and the status of the passengers i'm going to turn it over to san francisco fire chief jo ann hayes white. chief? >> good afternoon, everyone. i wanted to let you know and emphasize again what the mayor stated obviously and john martin as well. the tragedy at san francisco international airport but i want to assure you that the scene is now secured. it required the cooperation of multiagencies. at approximately 11:34 a.m. this morning the san francisco fire department who operates the fire fighting down here, we have three stations. we were called to the scene as well as units from san

. >> reporter: fire chief joanne hayes-white on the confirmation her department feared that it was their truck that killed a teenager on the tarmac after asiana flight 214 crash-landed at sfo on july 6. three chinese students died. one of the bodies was found near the plane's left wing. the girl was on the ground covered in firefighting foam when she was run over by one, possibly two, of the department's advanced fire rescue vehicles. >> it was a difficult challenging scene. >> reporter: ye meng yuan is picture here on the tarmac with another victim. this morning the coroner made the announcement about ye meng yuan. >> multiple blunt injuries that are consistent with being run over by a motor vehicle. those injuries she received she was alive at the time. >> reporter: she died of internal hemorrhaging. the coroner says we will never know what kind of injuries she may have sustained in the crash before being hit by the truck. the investigation into how this happened continues by the san francisco police and the ntsb. >> i plan to visit the airport to talk to the crews that are working tod

this news conference started at sfo just about an hour ago with san francisco fire chief joanne hayes-white taking the podium first. she said right off the bat that she was so proud of all of the first responders really calling it a joint effort between san francisco fire, police, and crews from san mateo county. we are going to continue to listen in. >> i just started grabbing pieces of luggage, whatever i could do to get myself inside there and then lieutenant katano -- i can't pronounce his name right now. it's too hard. he came behind me and i started passing him luggage. we wanted to pass the luggage out so we could get the fire crew out there. at that time it was pretty safe. there was smoke in the air. the fire crew was doing a good job suppressing the heat. so i went inside there and a lot of people had injuries and couldn't move out of their seats. they were also just scared to move. i was with the fire crew and follow off with them what to do, trying to get back towards them in there. we started -- i started coughing and the lieutenant, she started coughing, too. she started takin

the fire chief, joanne hayes white, spoke offering condolences and apologize to the girl's family, offering to meet face to face if they so wished, adding that her and her colleagues are heartbroken, especially considering that they are in the business of saving lives. the chief confirmed the young girl was run over by specialized airport fire truck called an arf, which stands for airport rescue firefighting. they are still trying to figure out which one was specifically responsible for her death as there were many on scene that afternoon. these are the trucks that were spraying foam to put out the fire on that 777 airplane. the fire department believes ye ming yuan was covered in foam and like on the ground by the left wing when she was hit and killed. still trying to figure out whether that foam hid her from view. the chief calls this a tragic accident and the chief is investigating the crash of flight 21 46r789. >> could we have done something different faced with the challenges we have in terms of passengers still on an aircraft that was engulfed in flames at least part of the aircraft

and even in the recent issue we had at the airport, and i know chief suhr and chief joanne hayes white are here today and they spent the entire weekend out at sfo dealing with that issue, but we saw there were officers on television going into this situation as well and risking their lives. so, here today we have a hero and i'm just so happy that you're a part of the organization. i know the captain is here and some of the other folks to acknowledge you. and he is one of the first responders to clearly respond on the scene and save someone. both the woman and officer la braae were taken to the hospital and i'm just so glad that you are okay and she is okay and everyone is living to tell the story. and, so, this is truly amazing. officer la braae has been with the department for 15 years. i know he looks a lot younger than that.
