there's mixed emotions here at hayward city hall. some measure of closure because police say they have identified a suspect in these two cases. but there's also frustration because the suspect died many, many years ago. let's take a look at what we have here today. police today identified fred farnum as the suspect in two sexual assaults and homicides in the east bay. he died in 2007, in a hospital of unknown causes, at the age of 73. farnum had an extensive criminal history, including convictions for sexual assault. authorities say genetic genealogy has linked farnum to the 1972 sexual assault and beating death of nellie hicks in newark. her body was found by one of her sons. farnum has also been tied to the 1979 sexual assault and beating death of teresa pica, and hayward. three of her children found her body. now, we did talk to newark police and hayward police, as well as a victim of the rather a son of the newark victim. >> this case passed through the hands of generations of investigators, and their determination and tenacity h
