michael kranish and scott helman. it's a fascinating book. taken a close look at mitt romney from the very beginning. gentleman, i welcome you to the show. appreciate your time being with us. first and foremost, what was your big take away? who is the real mitt romney? >> i think it's a hard question to answer in two seconds. it took us 360 odd pages to do that, i think. as you know, he's rooted in family. deeply rooted in his mormon faith. he is very much committed to following his father's example, george romney's example. he's somebody politically who has been hard to pin down as you know. he's run several races over the last two decades and had sort of a different political persona in each. somebody who we've seen having trouble connecting on the campaign train but is privately apparently very warm, very human, very funny. so he's a complicated figure. i think we all can talk about strengths and weaknesses. we have a fascinating account, we think, of a man who is -- despite the news this morning, i think he's still poised to be the republ

with me is michael kranish and scott helman. they've covered romney for year is.iness strategist and author of "the entrepreneur equation." michael and scott, you wrote the book on mitt romney. on the face of it, romney has a brilliant resume to be president. he's ran bain, bailed out the olympics. all these good things. and yet at the moment, this message is being translated into he doesn't understand the cares and concerns of ordinary people. he's a job slayer, not creator and so on. where is he going wrong in selling this message? >> well, piers, it's interesting because we go back in his history to 1994 when he ran for the u.s. senate against edward kennedy, a lot of the same issues came up. for example, there were ads run by the kennedy campaign against him saying he was killing jobs. this should not be a surprise at all. also interesting on the tax returns you brought up, in '94 mitt romney challenged ted kennedy to release his tax returns. kennedy obviously being wealthy. kennedy declined. romney said, if he'll release his, i'll release mine. the issue of t
