he beat herbster by a little. a little is a enough. >> charles herbster, there had been some sexual misconduct allegations against him. any sense as to how this played into the results? >> i think it hurt him. basically, if we look right here and the polling share pre-allegations, what do we have? we have 36%. this is with undecided allocated. look at where he ended up. he ended up at 31%. it was a small difference, but if you go back to this slide and you can see how close this race was. you see that drop from 36 to 31 probably made the difference. and this is the type of drop that you might expect from harassment allegations of which there were many against him. so to my mind, it did, in fact, probably make the difference, john >> so the trump endorsement so far this season, how effective has it been? >> so, look. trump may endorsement scorecards in races where there were either two incumbents running in the case of west virginia two or no incumbents at all. donald trump is still 4 for 5. he's still 4 for 5. he'

you had jim pillen winning, 43.3% to charles herbster's 29.7. and brett lindstrom coming in third at 25.8%. aides to trump knew this was a riskier move. they were bracing themselves for a loss. and i think there are two main takeaways here. one is, as you said, john, there are a lot of questions. does this actually diminish trump's status as kingmaker? it's way too early to tell. one thing i want to point out, last week in ohio and this week here in west virginia and nebraska, three names. matt dolen in ohio, david mckinley, and brett lindstrom. these are three republicans who are not in any way anti-trump, they just don't agree with him oempk. they are not even moderate republicans, but it shows you they came in third. mckinley losing by that huge margin and lindstrom coming in third. this shows you the direction that the republican party is going in. and likely what we're going to see more of is that trump-backed support, that trumpian agenda and agreeing with him on all fronts. these are not anti-trumpers, they just didn't agree with him on e

how damaging are these accusations for herbster? >> probably not the damaging at all. the brand. but we are seeing now is the republican party, at large, and certainly larger elements of the base don't factor those things in. it doesn't matter that you've been alleged to have relations with people outside of your spouse or groping individuals or, even, borderline pedophilia. we've seen this goes back to the 2018 cycle. these issues are less and less important to that base. i think partly because there has not been a cohesive counter narrative played up. as we see, the right is going after the left on things related to cultural issues, you do not see that counter punch from the left saying, okay, i know we are saying about me, but what about this laundry list. the cawthorn narrative alone should have been a huge political fodder for the left. and yet, most of the damage is being inflicted by fellow republicans, who are trying to do the heisman with this guy. -- >> you're talking about when he accused many of engaging in drugs and origins and alike? and the left didn't r

trump saw the first loss of his 2022 endorsements in nebraska after pillen defeated herbster.murray, phil rucker and in philadelphia yamiche alcindor. mark, to you. the president is now not pitching a perfect game when it comes to 2022. it's early in the season. what was surprising, if anything, last night? >> i'm guilty of this. we often get caught up in the donald trump endorsement win/loss record and lose sight of the overall transformation of the republican party today. you are right, charles herbster ended up finishing second in the republican primary but came within three percentage points of being able to win. this is somebody charged credibly of multiple groping allegations, of which he denies. we look in west virginia. someone who ended up supporting an infrastructure bill, someone whose old district was a big component of the new congressional district in west virginia, ends up losing because donald trump decided to endorse the other candidate. donald trump will lose races. the way he changed his party is what really stands out. >> to phil, how much do we factor this

. >> in nebraska, however, cnn projects will beat charles herbster in the primary. from charles town, west virginia this morning. what's the larger picture this morning? >> reporter: good morning, erica and jim. the republican party is still working on redefining itself in this post-trump presidency era and while it's clear that the former president still has an enormous grip on the party, it's also clear that it's not absolute. particularly, when trump endorses a candidate like herb ster who is facing a slew of sexual misconduct investigations, which he denies. what's interesting about both of these races, they were both similar proxy wars. however, they yielded different results. when you look here in west virginia on one side, you had congressman alex mooney endorsed by trump and then david mckinley backed by essentially the entire establishment of west virginia politicians, including republicans and democrats like democratic senator joe manchin and mooney won easily here and quickly. the final margins were mooney at 51.2% and mckinley at 35.6%. it was abundantly
