this is a glimpse of hertz's debt distribution. the second panel here is hertz.though the bars are comparable, they're not really. in 2018, the second column here, about $314 million in 136rest, while avis owes million dollars in interest. if you go over to 2022, this is a big discrepancy between the two. hertz owes $1 billion more than avis. you go to the third panel, and this is basically hertz minus avis. you can see that hertz owns more than avis until 2023. avis has more debt do beyond five years. this is a sense of the cash flow problems they might encounter over the next couple of years, especially as their business slows down overall. julia: hertz shock everybody when they canceled their plans to refinance some of their debt. that will be one of the questions on the call as well that the ceo gets after. let me give you a sense of what investors are thinking on this one, the gilad line here, we are showing you the equity performance for hertz down over 30% this year. we are showing you the blue area and the white lines. as you can see, chunk, chunk, chunk

cpi earnings from of all places, hertz. you might ask why we are highlighting hertz this week. disclosing that it was not going to use the proceeds of a recent sale of senior debt to buy back existing subordinated bonds as it had previously indicated. hertz did not give a plan for what it was going to do from the senior bond sale just two months ago. still with me as michael collins, priya misra, and nick maroutsos from janus henderson investors. in the consumer discretionary space, this is the most traded debt. the volume of it is ridiculously high. everyone's talking about it in the credit space. if someone put that credit in front of you now, what would you say back to them? michael: it's highly traded because it's exciting and there's a lot of news and a lot of volatility. the markets are looking for a volatile story they can trade around a little bit. in light of the low volatility environment. earlier this year, there was reduced exposure to the auto rental space, auto rental asset backspace, and even the auto space and the auto supply space to some extent because it look

hertz, the car rental company, tumbling by about 7%. down as much is 11%.ll of this on an analyst bid? >> it is a research analyst who says that hurts may have breached the terms of some of its debt. it goes back to may of this year when hertz had 1.2 billion dollars worth of lien debt. as it proceeds would be used for 2018 and 2019 debt. if you go back last month, they suddenly said we are not going to redeem the 2019 debt. in which you can see there is a big drop-off in the stock at the end of july. and they thought it was second-quarter earnings. what the analysts note today is that by canceling plans to hertzm that that -- debt, risks defaulting on its debt and it could be viewed as missing a payment. the same analyst did go on to say that it is unlikely that it will decide to take action. they recover things like that. >> interesting. it there has been a lot of struggling. we appreciate it. what you miss? new rules will prohibit the purchase of newly issued venezuelan debt and equity and apply similar restrictions to state oil companies. will bee exist

hertz falling along with avis after disappointing earnings results from his competitors.k you so much. president trump holding a major briefing on the opioid crisis this hour along with tom price. opioid addiction may have started as a health and social issue, but it has metastasize as an economic issue. it may even be driving the declining in the labor participation rate. joining us now from boston is jeff. he has been writing and researching this topic. great to speak with you. social illness affects a number of people using opioids along with people who are released from prison and cannot find jobs. can you quantify that for us? is there a dollar amount here that is tied to the cost of this structural damage? jeff: absolutely. these things, these are issues that the deeper you dive into them, the worse they look. most people estimate the cost of addiction treatment somewhere around $8 billion a year. the cost of incarceration, $80 billion a year. in many ways, that is a small fraction of the cost. we look at it from the standpoint of an economy that is running out of l
