a giant tree fell down overnight in pleasant hill. leigh martinez is in the neighborhood where that tree used to stand. this was no ordinary tree. >> reporter: that's right. this is a bicentennial heritage tree, a protected tree. now that it is daylight we can see it is still standing. it is just a huge chunk of the tree that has come down. and neighbor told us it is a live oak. it is protected by the city of pleasant hill. a big chunk came crashing down last night. you can see some of the cars are still underneath. it looks like they chopped off quite a bit to open up the roadway. we don't know what caused the large tree to fall down just after midnight, but when it did it made a big impact, smashing seven vehicles parked on hardy circle. neighbors came outside last night. the damaged cars, some of them were towed earlier this morning. crews were working to remove the tree. on the trunk was a placard that read bicentennial heritage tree. that means it was a tree measuring 16 inches or larger indict and -- in diameter. you can still s
